I deliberately don't listen to any entries until mine is done , or at least fleshed out and ready for tweaking. I am sure that if anyone had gone the same route as I was thinking, I would get a mental block and my inspiration would freeze

Just dusted off the old cobwebs :) Had 2 days off work and rustled up my first home recording in over 12 years, maybe more. It's the first on Cubase, which is way better than my old hard disk recorders! Where did all that time go?

I loved that picture for this month, really resonated with me, so had it in mind when choosing sounds and vibes:

I recall heeding that advice from your good self a while back, and I am now indeed stumped !! In my defence, how often does anyone think along the same lines as Dad !!

hi folks, sorry for missing last month. had no end of hassles with BT after moving house and its only just gotten sorted.

either way, i have an entry here. i am chuffed with it personally as it seems to me a far cry from my earlier efforts with regards to structure and mixing. i went down a fairly poetic route route with it.

Here's mine. https://soundcloud.com/mornats/i-am-become-death

I wanted something that built up dramatically but didn't go on and on building up so I went fairly mournful at the end, focusing a bit on the aftermath of the bombs. Learnt a fair bit about midi cc controls and was very chuffed when I managed to get my Maschine Jam set up to control up to 8 midi cc sliders at once! Expression, dynamics and vibrato all at my fingertips whilst I play away in Albion One now! I've even got a fair few sliders left for luscious verb and what not.

Thanks Chili :) Those synth textures came from Massive Darkscore V for Massive and Photosynthesis Volume 1 by Audio Imperia.

Uh oh, want the Albion One now....

It's good. Very, very good. It's quite an outlay but it all sounds great together and is easy to work with. How much RAM do you have in your computer though? My piece above had around 24 tracks plus a reverb track and takes 9.5GB of RAM and there's not a lot on there!

The solo violin was Kirk Hunter Solo Strings by the way. A really nice sounding library but you need to try and match the reverb to Albion One's. I find that Native Instruments' RC 48 on a medium hall preset gets you close. The legatos in KH Solo Strings aren't great IMO. I tried a lovely sounding cello legato but it loops incredibly badly and you can hear a very sharp loud attack note halfway through the loop. It looped after around 3 seconds too so it was unusable in this. The violin I went with (the Stradivarius patch) was better but I can hear where it loops. Fairly subtle as I timed the dynamics to dip around the loop point but honestly, I shouldn't have to work around this sort of thing. I'm eyeing up Spitfire Solo Strings as a result now.

Boy, you sound deep into this, good on you :)

Thanks to a recent bass purchase I have cash flow issues, due to an old laptop I have RAM and weak processor issues, due to using Cubase Elements I have currently have drum issues as Groove Agent doesn't have a beat designer type tool, and due to general life I have very limited time to play around making tunes. Therefore, whilst this week off work has been great to tinker and learn I'll be stuffed when I go back.

First thing though will be to sort out a beat designer tool. After that, I reckon I can save for a better laptop and then Albion if all is going well. To me £399 is not really a lot for an instrument/ tool like that.

Cheers for the run down, maybe in a year or two I'll be digging up this thread again to see what you used!

Here we go. I tried to capture the fear I felt as a child watching those 'Duck and Cover' type adverts of what to do if there is a nuclear bomb falling within earshot. Scared the s*** out of me and ruined an otherwise idyllic childhood.

After some criticism, I revised the song and re recorded the bass. This time a jazz bass via di pedal. I remastered the song to the best of my capabilities and hearing (getting worst) so here we go, the version I want to enter the competition with:
