So you say to people when asked, what do you use,
"a G&L" and they say... what?
whats that ?
does not help not being able to find any as stock in shops, so people cant see or try them,
i think the importer is JHS
but why are they not advertised over here ?

Possibility because they're so similar to Fender/Musicman? (rightfully so mind) Shops know that Fenders sell so might not want to pay upfront for stock if it might just sit there for a while.

I'd love to try 1, I was about to get a L2500 secondhand before I got my Lull but the seller withdrawn it from sale!
I was pretty gutted about that, I only ever hear good things about 'em! :(

First time I've seen/heard "King Thumb" actually playing with a band! Quite a tasty player!

As is this guy - Jodie Bremaneson of Skerryvore. With a lovely blue G&L...

I think G&L basses are generally under rated. Leo himself is quoted as saying about G&L's ..."among the best I have ever made.." or words to that effect.

I have the L2000, the SB2 (my avatar) and the JB2.

All have their own individual tone and charactetistics. It does not bother me that others don't know about them, but it can be frustrating when I go into a reasonably large music shop, and find not one G&L bass displayed.

Yep...that's the quote. ;)

It would make you wonder why G&L's are not more popular.

G & L is the least well known of Leo's projects.

I seem to remember some sort of legal threat from Fender that made sure that G & L were originally very limited in how much they could use Leo and George's names in promoting their new instruments.(although I could have dreamt it).

I tried a great sounding Tribute L2500 a few weeks back in a shop. The salesman was saying how he loved it but strangely it hadn't sold. He also said that he had lost count of the number of times that buyers had come in and tried it and raved about how good it was, only to walk out with a Fender.

I have settled into Stingrays and G&L's. I have an SB-2, L1505 and Tribute L2000. L really like them all but I'm currently trying to cut down so would like the sell the L1505 and L2000 to raise a bit of cash and get Tribute L2500. The SB2 and SR5's it has cured my GAS''just looking for a lower priced back-up

I have a G&L Asat bass that I would say is the best built and sounding bass I've ever owned.
I think the main problem with G&L is they don't seem to be stocked much in the UK. I can't recall ever seeing a add for them in any of the media.

Do you find it has a lot of neck dive? I tried lovely semi hollow ASAT recently but the neck dive put me off

The SB2 is an amazing bass. The only thing that a lot of people don't like about them is the absence of a tone knob...it has two volume ones. A small upgrade can easily rectify this...then IMO... it is as good as any Fender precision...any day.

I spent ages trying to try a L/M 2500 in a shop, but nothing, I even tried all the stores on a road trip round the states and didn't see any there, but eventually just bought one on the basis I could always sell it if it was no good. I still have it.
Its not my main bass, but it is better than the fenders i have had.

Don't tell the class D naysayers as he appears to have a great sound with a Genz head, what a fool, if only he knew about all the heft he was missing out on! :D

I bought an ASAT guitar from 1991 way back. Gigged it in preference to a telecaster on the UK country circuit for years. PLAYERS looked at it like it was some sort of mutant "copy" but it is still the best ever un-telecaster I have ever played.
I think G&L shot themsleves in the foot by introducing the Tribute stuff before they had a really good established market and word-of-mouth on the USA instruments.
Great build, all the thingas you didnt like about Fender fixed... whats not to like? Apart from the depreciation.I bought mine used off a guy in New York for $300!
Immaculate, with the case.

I was concerned about the lack of a tone control but my worries were unfounded, I reckon Leo got it right. After a little experimenting and blending of the two volumes, I could get all the tonal variations that I wanted. :)

I don't think Ed Roman's famous rant about G&L build quality helped their reputation much.

"I hereby rescind any positive recommendations I have made regarding G&L instruments. I hereby will no longer recommend the G&L product to my customers. And I will buy back any G&L guitar that was purchased from me within a two year period for full price paid"

He was always something of a maverick but was one of the biggest names in US guitar retailing and offering to buy back any G&L he'd sold was a pretty big knock.

I must admit that we tried stocking them for a while at BassGear and they were very slow moving so we delisted them.
