Chris Larkin will do a fretted version of his Blen EUB

Or Alter-Ego have a 'well tempered' option on their EUBs

I spoke to Hilary James at a gig once. Even though she plays a mandobass her oppinion wasn't high on them. They were made very cheaply and as a result not many old ones have survived. The Bass Centre had one in stock donkey's years ago priced over £3000. I was told that was way over priced and just stick with a double bass. Hilary just uses it for the novalty factor and has come to be associated with it.

Tony Overwater plays a 'fretted' viola de gamba electric upright in this link. Solo at 2.45.
Last night i dreamed I was playing a fretted double bass. It sounded amazing!! Am I right in saying that some of the early viol family were fretted (early music)? Are there examples of fretted double basses around ?
Found this pic in an old double bass reference book, a beauty of a 6 stringer with (possibly gut) frets.
You will have to enlarge the pic to see it well enough.
