Although it's purely personal taste some of my faves are probably (in no particular order) John Entwistle, Chris Squire, John Paul Jones, Leigh Gorman, JJ Burnel, Lemmy, Stu Zender, Geezer Butler, Mark King, John McVie, Gary Thain and Sir Paul.
John Taylor gets dismissed as he was a pretty boy but he could play his bloody instrument, don't worry about that.
 2.
I've read most of the thread, and if you hadn'y posted him, I would've. As an adjunct to that, I saw Morrissey last week. Highly entertaining! Played 6 Smiths tunes, too. Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias (guitars) were very good, but still not Johnny Marr. Solomon Walker (Bass) was soild and didn't drop a note all night. Nonetheless, he was not Andy Rourke. Okay, Matt Walker was better than Mike Joyce!
Yup Andy Rourke is right up there for me......a tune within a tune is what I heard his bass playing described as.
 3. Damn I should have asked for that for xmas.....Mick is one of the reasons I chose to learn bass
 4. i was lucky enough to see PIL in '92 when they not only had the legendy John McGeoch on guitar but MiKe Joyce from The Smiths on drums. Except for the track 'Public Image' I didn't really like the early PIL stuff but once I heard 'Album', I bought everything after that
 5. The man is a legend...Simple Minds were never the same after he went
 6.

The Jam, Glasgow Apollo, April '82.
That wins!, you can close the thread now
 7.
I must confess McCartney leaves me very cold. Undeniably, a brilliant songwriter, but as a bassist? Er, no. Funny that everyone goes for Jaco bashing. Whilst it's not my bag, you can't deny that he changed a great many people's views on bass and I think he's fantastic. Whilst I don't particularly like slap, you can't deny that King is amazingly good at it. I wouldn't diss anyone who is probably the best at what they do. I'd also like to add Pino Palladino to my list of "criminally overated." However, that might have something to do with the fact that he replaced Entwistle in the Who and can't hold a candle to the man either in terms of tone or technique. I'm an Entwistle fan boy. My cards are now on the table. Seeing them play Glastonbury a few years ago on TV almost made me ill. Adam Clayton as well. Though that could have something to do with the fact that U2's albums over the last 10 years have been awful. For those who say that Entwistle didn't deserve "Bassist of the Millenium" tag, that's fair enough and a matter of opinion. Different genres are obviously going to put people off thus making objective comparisons impossible. Were Jaco still alive and recording maybe he would have won, though it's worth noting that he was further down the list than McCartney which is bonkers in my opinon. Who is really better at PLAYING the bass out of those 2? The fact that Entwistle won that poll I would assume would have something to do with the 515 solo from the Who's 1999 - 2000 tour which went on before that poll was taken. Right or wrong, I'd always go for people who can play and solo well.
Have to agree that Pino is no replacement for John Entwistle. I saw a live performance of 'My Generation' and was all excited waiting for the bass solo and it was crap. Oh and yeah U2's albums have been terrible recently. I you listen to 'Boy', Adam Clayton was doing much more comlpicated stuff at 18 than he is now. Oh and I'm afraid I don't get Jaco's stuff at all...leaves me totally cold.
 8. I am sure half these gigs have been made up to make people sound cool when actually it was The Nolans or Black Lace. Mine was The Thompson Twins in 1984 at the Brighton Centre.
 9. I'd forgotten how fit she was back then, how the hell did that twat Chris Evans slip her a length?...not so sure now she's turned into a middle aged frumpy gardener. There's no bass player in the official video either
 10. Been practicing all afternoon then I see this and release how crap I am Pino's a legend
 11.
He was cool. Seeing him playing (I think) a Guild B301 painted like the Japanese flag (memory fading) in 1980 made me want to be a bass player. Thanks for the reminder. I tried to set up a Pretenders-style band, and one of the potential frontwomen was Eddi Reader. Always got at (not) spotting talent, me...
You are correct, here is the very bass you were talking about...wonder were it is now?..don't think it's a Guild B301 though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCf5wLyfkvQ
 12.
The sound of his bass on "Mystery achievement"...you can hardly do better.
You are so right...that and Space Invader are the two that grabbed my attention...the tone is killer
 13.
Me. Great bass player. Always played for the song. Met him a couple of times on the London bike scene too. Obscenely quick rider on an old Triumph Bonneville.
He rode a Bonneville?... He's just gone up even further in my opinion!.....for me a bloke that grew up in a house that was British bike mad that makes him great on two accounts!
 14. 30 years after it's release I finally got round to listening to The Pretenders first album and loved some of the bass parts on it. After googling it, I found it was a guy called Pete Farndon who tragically died from drug abuse in 1983 but looked cool as f**ck, bit like Paul Simenon crossed with the Stray Cats Oh and James Honeyman-Scott's guitar playing is worth a mention as well, another one who died of drug abuse in the same year. What a waste.
 15. Mick Karn - Cantonese Boy John Taylor - Rio JJ Burnell- Freddie Laker (first 30 seconds) Andy Rourke - Barbarism Begins At Home Bernard Edwards - I Want Your Love Geddy Lee - YYZ Bruce Foxton - Start! (Yes I Know It's Taxman)
