1. Hi, just looking for a bit of advice. I'm in the fortunate position of being able to afford a new 4003S, I've always coveted a Rickenbacker, but now it's coming to crunch time, I'm wavering a bit. Got a few of questions; Is the 4003S worth having, or would I be better off getting an older used model? I'm currently playing a Yamaha BB414, only been playing for 4 years, I'm average at best. Are they just as easy to play as the BB? (I have got an Epiphone Thunderbird copy more for looks than practicality, hangs on the wall more than it's played). Is it going to give me anything extra sound wise? Gigging through TC Electric BG250 combo. I know it's a nice dilemma to have, but I don't want to look like a Flash Twat with more money than talent! Thanks for any advice FLS
2. Great thread and some really good bands. Here's ours, The Vespbrettas, Hastings, East Sussex. Playing for the Scooter scene, 60's Ska, Mod revival. https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Vespbrettas/147326628716436
3. HI does anyone have any advice on setting up a TC BG250 combo to give me something akin to an "Entwhistle" type sound. Only really want it for one song (after 4 years I now have a passable My Generation break) so possibly a Tone print? Playing either a Epi Thunderbird or a Yammy BB 414. Don't usually go in for effects, just stand at the back and keep it tight, but hey 2015 could see a change of heart!
4. Thanks everyone. Going to road test a CTR500-115T on Friday
5. Posted on here a few times about my Trace Eliot 2 x 12 combo and how I've struggled to get the best out of it. Well last nights gig was the final straw, Tuning up, nasty smell of burning and then smoke issuing from one of the speakers. So it's got to go. Got about £300 to spend. Need something to sit nicely into a five piece playing 60's, mod revival and ska, mainly pubs, small clubs. something that doesn't weigh as much as the TE would be nice. Ashdown MAG C115-300 EVO III Combo has caught my eye, any comments? Thanks
6. Thanks for the advice Thumper & Chris. I'm playing a Yamaha BB414 with a very low action. Had the same strings on it for about 18 months! Suppose they're due for a change. Would any particular type be better? Think the trolley idea might be favourite
7. I've played around with the presets, and numerous combinations on the EQ. What I'm looking for is a smooth even mid range sound, but what I hear is quite edgy, specially on the decay and I don't seem to be able to smooth it out. Also the unit weighs a ton, and I wanted something a bit lighter.
8. I have been gigging for just over a year, mainly pubs, with a Trace Elliot 2 x10 - GP12 SMX 300w Combo. This is a second hand unit, which at the time was all I could afford. Have to say, I've never really got the measure of it, and the sound is not really what I want. We play 60's, Mod revival and a bit of Ska as a five piece with rhythm and lead guitars. We're quite loud and as I'm always stuck at the back in some tight spaces, the dynamic of this combo never cuts through. I am considering an Ashdown Electric Blue 15-220 Evo III Combo, which sits in my price range of around £350. Anybody got any comments on the unit, or recommendations for similar units which could give me more bang for my buck, or something that would come in a bit more commercially priced and still deliver. Being quite new to this, I'm completely in the dark about Heads and Cabs, so haven't really thought of this as an alternative. Again any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
9. Hi I've been using this compact combo for about a year now, and to be honest I've never got to grips with setting it up. I left all the settings as they were, plugged and played, but now want to develop my own sound. Trouble is I don't really know how to go about it. The band I play in have a set that consists of covers from The Who, The Jam, The Specials and other Mod 60's sounds. Gigging consists of a range of pubs that vary in size and acoustic quality, so I'm probably not getting the best out of my plug and play option. I can't play around with it at home as it makes the windows shake, and sets next doors dog off, and practice sessions are in a small studio, where I have to keep the volume down. Has anyone out there got one of these and can offer some help, or would someone be good enough to give me some tips, as to how to get the most out of what I have at my disposal. I'm playing a Yamaha BB414 with triple pick up options if that has any bearing. Thanks in advance FLS
10. Hi Wondered if anyone could recommend a decent Combo as my first giging amp? The band play mostly 60's covers with a bit of Freakbeat and the occasional Who track. We've a lead and rhythm guitar and a very energetic drummer with a double bass pedal! I'm looking for something that'll have a bit of presence, playing mostly pubs or small clubs, but as always I'm on a budget, probably got about £350 to spend. I've really no idea as to the sound I want to create, although I would love a sort of Entwhistle vibe!!! Someone suggested the Laney RB4 at 160 watts, or an Ashdown EB12-180, any comments on that or any other suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks
11.
This is the song that convinced Joe Strummer he had to be a musician.
yeh well its convincing me that Im not going to be one does anyone have a clue what the notes are? Theres a neat little triple in there, but try as i might i can't get close.
12. Can anyone give me the definative version of what Billy Boy is actually playing on the original track? Thanks
13.
I love a bit of garage. G C Bb C with G C F, G F D in the solo bits. Edit: Search out the Amy release rather than the Transworld version on the Nuggets 2 box set (for example). The bass is a lot clearer on the Amy version.
Brilliant! Thanks Musky will start searching.
14. Hi I've been playing for about 6months now, and starting to get the idea, although I'm terrible at naming the notes I'm playing. I'm really into the Freakbeat 60's scene and Mod + Northern Soul. Getting together with a couple of other 50 somethings to start a band to play at local Scooter events. My apologies for the number of posts I'm likely to put out asking for transcription help. A lot of the tabs out there don't do the songs justice. If I'd wanted it to be easy I'd have taken up the triangle Thanks in advance for any help given.
