1. Learnjazzstandards is a great website resource for anyone starting to learn jazz bass. Tons of good stuff on there.
2.
There's a clue in my User name: '33' is France, '53' is Mayenne, halfway between Le Mans and Rennes. Pop in for a cup of tea if you're in the region.
Ah Ok. Should've worked that one out. Nice up there. Hope the music scene is busy and the gigs are good. We pass through from time to time on the way to the North West and past Le Mans on the motorway heading up to Ouistreham for the ferry. The final upshot of all this is that the venue tried to replace us with a Guitar/Vocalist who is a guy we have worked with dozens of times and deps for us occasionally and is one of our best mates, he has turned them down and now they have no entertainment for one of their busiest events of the year. Tough s***. Thanks everyone for your help and comments Steve
3. Thanks for all your comments, I will talk to MU today and see if they have jurisdiction beyond the UK. Where are you based Douglas?
4. Thanks everyone for the information. The only "contract" is an agreement on an e-mail detailing the date and the fee. Whilst we would prefer not to lose the gig we have found out today that he has pulled similar tricks before. We will proceed with caution. Steve
5. Good Afternoon All Can anyone tell me if MU contracts are normally used/enforceable outside the UK? We are in France. We have a problem with a venue that has a long running dispute with another venue and have told us "if you play there we will cancel". We are calling his bluff for the moment and have told him that his dispute is not our problem and we aren't going to be told where we can or can't play but any advice would be welcome. Thanks Steve
6. My experience pretty much reflects those above, if it is a song I know I can usually do it on the fly. I started working with a different band recently and when I asked for the key for a certain song I was told "Capo 5". After several weeks we have finally got to a point where we are all playing the same key, but have all got chord sheets sourced from different places which although supposed to be the same song in the same key are often totally different.
7. Squier CV Jazz with TI Jazz Flats - lovely.
8. Guitars of all kinds carry 3.2% duty:- http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/measures.jsp?Lang=en&SimDate=20160227&Taric=9200000000&LangDescr=en The duty is based on the value of the item if it includes shipping and insurance, or the supplier may put it separately on the invoice but it is still included for duty purposes. VAT is 20% of the value of the item (including shipping and insurance) plus the duty. The carrier will almost certainly add a clearance fee and a small percentage for prepaying the duty and VAT to customs.
9. I think most branches of Staples act as DHL drop off points.
10. I have a jazz with TI jazz flats that I now use specifically when I am with a jazz quartet and get good comments from my band mates.
11. Just started playing with a jazz quartet and found there is so much out there with cracking bass lines. Blue Bossa is lovely.
12.
Steve, that's a great resource and not just for 'starters'
Hi Roger Long time no see, how are you these days??. I have been in France for 4 years now where there is a massive shortage of bass players in all genres so I get to play all sorts of stuff that I never tried before. Oh... and sometimes the sun shines. Steve
