I just think it's amusing that he's going to use these strings (or at least 'says' he is) on a headless bass and they don't even seem to be available in double ball end sets. Yes, I know that the single ball end sets can be anchored using the grub screws in the nut piece, but what a faff! I know what sort of string I'd rather use on a headless! It does seem very strange to me that he's moved to Rotosound in favour of Status strings, particularly as Rob Green seems to constantly chuck gear in MK's direction. Just as long as he doesn't go back to Fender...

Speaking of Pino, I would recommend that you dig out the first 2 Go West Albums ('Go West' and 'Dancing On The Couch'). Perhaps not the most obvious 'fretless' tunes but man, can that guy play a tasty, tight bassline. Essential listening for all fretless players in my opinion! Cheers Matt

That doesn't mean it's a scaled-down copy of a "real" bass ... just that it has a shorter neck with the frets closer together, and therefore a lower string tension to compensate. Good luck. I partly agree with Happy Jack with regards to choosing a bass - it would be madness to spend a fortune on a bass for her, but I would also say it's vital to actually try one before putting your hand in your pocket. The quality of cheap, mass-produced basses varies wildly (eg how the neck feels, how they play and sound, general construction etc). Consequently, there's no substitute for visiting your local music shops and trying a few - you'll know what plays well and sounds good etc but your daughter won't. As Happy Jack also mentioned, you could go down the second-hand route, but I would still recommend trying before buying. It's definitely possible to get a good bass that won't break the bank, but on the other hand she could end up with a piece of crap. Just my opinon (although I started on an Encore precision copy thing from my mum's Kays catalogue so it's amazing I stuck it out)! Cheers Matt

I may be using this technique in my goth rock band.[/quote] Hi Rob Actually, Mark King does not use a metal ring on his thumb - it's just tape. He started wrapping it around his thumb in the early days as he used to split his thumb open by hitting the strings so hard. Obviously it then became a bit of a trademark. I've not tried the slapring myself, but if it works for you and sounds good, I say use it. Cheers Matt

Not sure if this belongs in here or in the ‘Tenuous claims to fame’ thread as it’s about someone my wife met... The missus used to work at ‘Andy’s Records’ in Beverley, East Yorkshire. The Beverley Playhouse was quite nearby so they used to get a bit of passing trade from acts performing there - some fairly well known. One day she served a chap and, as he was leaving, one of her workmates, Andy (not the owner) said to her “er, do you know who that was?”. She didn’t. “Pino Palladino!” Obviously I wasn’t there and part of me wishes she hadn’t told me the tale. Matt
