is it dead string or fret buzz?

Check the neck relief by looking down the neck from the headstock. Some say the neck should be dead straight while others say it to should have a slight bow away from the strings. This can be adjusted using the truss rod.

If the relief is OK try raising the bridge saddle. It may be harder to fret but a super low action is not always achievable or desirable.

If you think the strings are dodgy try a new set.

Old Git is from Cardiff.

The 414 has the same head layout as the Fender P I believe?

I had a similar problem on my Ibanez, and solved it by adding a nother string tree on the head so that the break angle over the nut is the same for all 4 strings...... I was convinced that my truss rod was sympathetically harmonizing at open A (either that or the string was rattling in a slightly oversize nut slot)

What ever it was having al 3 strings at the same break angle has cured it!
