No, there's no way I'm good enough (or rich enough) to warrant spending that much on a bass. I don't think I'd want to spend that much on a bass anyway.
For sale at Vintage and Rare for the princely sum of £6850... :)

But it is absolutely stunning. That matching headstock is just... "wow!". Would you?
Look closer - it has some weird plastic cover ('Parker Bodyguard') stuck all over the body...
That would massively de-value this bass to a serious collector. A large part of the great tone from vintage Fender basses is due to the thin Nitro coating on the body - this lets the wood 'breathe' & resonate. The custom colour basses tend to have a poorer tone anyway compared to the sunburst ones because of the thicker paint - then this one has had a thick layer of plastic glued to it!!! It's a DOG!!!
I wouldn't touch it. Let alone pay £6850. Hilarious!
And 1966 Jazz basses are not a great year anyway - they're generally to be avoided if your after a 60's era Jazz bass.

I can just imagine the conversation if you were taking that bass into them to SELL - they wouldn't give you tuppence for it like that!

only thing is, I don't want to enquire what the prices are... I'd get depressed knowing I could never own one unless I were to win on the premium bonds... :)

OK, what are the signs of that bodyguard coating then? the weird "bars" visible on the rear view?
The bodyguard is just a clip-on thing. It's good that it's there.
They can leave a bad imprint on the instrument finish around the edge of the guard, which can't be removed.

A bit of a rub down with wet and dry will sort that out. :)

He's right about the custom colour......

most of them were just sunburst then painted over in whatever custom colour was desired !!

2 layers of paint..... no thanks....!!

However (IMHO) 66 was a superb year........

The six string is, as far i know tuned like a ordinary guitar, i the only people i have seen playing them are Jet harris and Dave ambrose (Brian auger trinity. he also played on jeff becks hi ho silver lining)
i'm sure there are people out there with more info on the fender VI

I went to their shop in Bath.

It was heaven - they made an offer on my Kustom Charger, but I hadn't had it long at that point.

They had two of those Fender VIs - try finding strings for one!

I wonder how many sets they sell.

I'm sorry but I just do not get this whole vintage Fender thing. I know why they have higher values, but that is just ridiculous. If I had that much money, I would go and have me a Sei/Shuker built which would almost certainly sound better than the Fender, then get me a real nice amp and still have money left over! It's just madness!

If you want to own a piece of history, go collect rocks or something!

Not to me, it wouldn't... then again, that's why we have freedom of choice, innit.

The guitarist in the band I play in played all the bass parts on the album on one of those before I joined. It sounds great!

 • 1 month later...

When a bass passes from being valued on its practical application, to being priced on its value to a collector IMHO it no longer has any relevence to me or my playing, except maybe in an historical interest sense.

It becomes an object that was once a nice bass.

Kinda like an Aston Martin DB6. They look great in a motor show but I'm never gonna get to drive one and my BMW is still a lovely car to drive.

I played a 1966 Fender Jazz at the Gallery in London last year. It was the nicest bass I've ever played. It was for sale for £4500 and i wish I'd been able to afford it.
