Flea. -given the choice I'd probably put him down for most of my top ten, but as that'd be a little unfair here's some more;

Geddy Lee

Marcus Miller

Pino Palladino

Mark King

Steve Harris

Stuart Zender

Bootsy Collins

Tony Levin

Guy Pratt(check out his OC-2 based work on Madonna's Like a Prayer ...nuff said! B))

Aye, that'll do me! :D

Not really up on who's who and never really 'studied' any bass players but these guys are probably my favourites all for different reasons- could not get to 10

Paul Simonon
J-P Jones
Peter Hook (!!)
JJ Burnel
Mick Karn

My faves must be those who inspired me most to choose the bass.
Have no idea about whose playing I like best.

Today I can remember:

Cor Dekker
Bert Ruiter
Chris Squire
Ray Shulman
Jaco Pastorius
Glenn Cornick
John Glascock
JJ Burnel
Pekka Pohjola
Mark Egan
Sean Malone

I hate these things, but anyway...choosen for a combination of distinctive style and/or significant contribution to some of my favourite albums rather than any kind of virtuosity

JJ Burnel
Jah Wobble
Bootsy Collins
Larry Graham
Robbie Shakespeare
Tina Weymouth
John Paul Jones
Wilbur Bascomb
Nornam Watt-Roy
Tony levin

Glenn Hughes
Eddie Jackson
Stuart Zender
Sting (Police era)
John Taylor
John Giblin
Mike Inez
Doug Pinnick
Nick Beggs
Cass Lewis

Looking back thru my list, the common theme seems to be that most have a very recognisible and distinctive sound. Pretty varied bunch though.

All the many bass players who don't stand out but are an integral part of what makes the track/song special...

Ok, here's mine!:

Mike Mills (R.E.M.)
Kim Deal (Pixies)
Bruce Foxton (The Jam)
Greg Norton (Husker Du)
Andy Rourke (The Smiths)
Nate Watts (Stevie Wonder)
Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters)
Jimi Goodwin (Doves)
Jenny Lee Lindberg (Warpaint)
Mani (The Stone Roses)

I realise that this will probably get flak for having too much of a Manc/Indie rock bent, but this list has been compiled based on the bands I like & who have inspired me/who I've pinched ideas off! There's no point mentioning Jaco Pastorious(That might be spelt wrong. Sorry!) or Victor Wooten when I don't have their records/CDs/downloads!
