SevenSeas
Anyone had any experience with travelling with a double bass on the eurotunnel? (by van) it says the rules are; *You are NOT permitted to use the Eurotunnel Passenger service to transport: * Commercial goods for resale * a total volume of goods (commercial or non commercial) exceeding 3 cubic metres. Obviously the resale isn't a problem. The volume of good however, it's impossible to say what double bass comes under as it's a large instrument? Anyone have any experience with this? Cheers,
Happy Jack
3 cubic metres is HUGE ... that's roughly 90 cubic feet. You'd need a bloody big DB to exceed that size limit.
bassace
No way is a DB anything like 3M3.

Cheers,
Good afternoon, SevenSeas (or may I call you Seven..?)... 3 cubic metres is just about a van-full. A bass, even in a full flight case, is going to be much less than that. If you're taking several basses, and filling a Transit completely, you'd have to rely on the goodwill of the ferry folks, or, better still, contact them beforehand and explain your situation. They're trying to protect their 'commercial vehicle' rates; once they're happy you're not a 'dodger', it should be OK, I'd reckon. Hope this helps; subject to correction, completion, contradiction from others...
BassBus
Just measured my 3/4 in its gig bag. At an over estimate it is about 0.4 cubic metre. So no problem really.

tinyd
Of course, the only way to be 100% sure is to immerse your DB in water and measure the volume of the water that's displaced
Owencf
Archimedes' principal. i can think of better ways of measuring the volume of my DB. but would require me taking it to work and using a CMM, but i havent been there that long to justify my curiosity. my boss is still getting used to my quirks
