Saw these in a local shop recently, tiny, but not convinced they'd really get a decent volume from them.

I know wattage is no measure of SPL, but... 5W..? :)
Edit: Sounds great, though.

True. I just checked out some you tube video's and they sound fine but sure i doubt if it would give much on stage volume above the guitar and drums.
However it's probably cheap enough to keep as a backup in your bag and would probably sound fine if you used it with mic'd up cab.

Would we really want to be running long speaker cables about the stage? Decent speaker cable is a bit heftier than an instrument cable.

That's true, but you can get them - long-run Speakon cables are used for PA.

Yeah, but they're bulky and awkward to route around the stage, being thicker and stiffer than instrument cable. A quality 6m Speakon cable is probably getting on for the size and weight of a small head like a GK MB or similar. So although you could stick the amp on the pedalboard, I think I'd still rather put it on top of the cab.

That's also true - in fact I don't see the point of having your amp on the floor unless you've got room on a sizeable pedalboard that you use anyway - there's no useful control you can have over it with your foot! And if you don't use pedals it's going on top of your cab so you'd probably want something bigger and heavier anyway as the thing will likely always be being vibrated or pulled off all the time.

Mmm... vibrated and pulled off all the time. Hurr. :gas:

There's the Demeter "Minnie" 800D. Not cheap though: http://www.juleamps.com/bass/de-monique.html

James Demeter makes a cool guitar amp designed to work on a pedal board :
