Recently, there was a listing on Craigslist London for a Zon bass that I fell for and got scammed. Guess what was posted an hour ago...

Can any authorities be alerted?
Honestly, I wouldn't know where to go. The only contact for the London police's internet crime division is online. From the letter I received from them, the most they will do is have the listing removed.

I saw this a few weeks ago, I remember thinking it was a great price.

Really, truly sorry to hear you got scammed.

Personally I wouldn't buy a bass that I couldn't collect, I won't even sell on Gumtree unless the buyer collects.

Bob, I've just read your TB thread and I really feel sorry for you.

A suggestion: follow the money.

Your bank should be able to trace the payment through to the UK bank and hence through to the account or holder where the money was paid.
The UK banking rules are really tight these days (anti money laundering) and for this amount, personal ID including name, address, photo ID etc. is needed. The bank should be able to identify the villain(s).

Craiglist should have sellers log details, too - even if it is only an IP address.

The only problem I can see is if the Penzance address is correct it will come under Devon and Cornwall Police
http://www.devon-cor...uiryOffice.aspx

The Craiglist London ad.will be in The Metropolitan Police area
http://content.met.police.uk/Home

Push your bank with it, give them all the detail you've got, they just may be able to help with tracing the money and, hopefully the git who scammed you, through the UK police services.

Best of luck.......
Is photo ID required to open an account, withdraw funds or both? The scammer banks online. Couldn't he just transfer funds to another account?

The ID is required to open an account whether you bank online or at a branch in person.

In the UK you cannot have an anonymous account - the bank will be able to trace him/her even assuming he/she instantly transferred the funds to another account. They will be able to trace that, too.

I'm sorry, I don't have all the answers but your bank and the police services have - pressure them to trace the scum - tell them it's not rocket science. They have the data, records, timeline and the means to rapidly trace the money path.

For what it's worth - I believe that there are only two 4 string Hyperbasses in the UK

1 belonged to me until yesterday (A Mk1 solid bridge model that is now on the way to Fred in Belgium)
and the other (Mk2 with the transposing bridge) belongs to GremlinAndy on here.

So if anyone sees any other ones on sale in the UK, do your homework very carefully, and pay cash on collection only. Even if you have to travel for a day!

Always assuming that the alleged seller actually lives in either of those places.

A couple of years back there was a WAL scam in a rather similar vein:

Based anywhere from Lerwick to Bournemouth via London... wonder if it's the same scammer?

You definitely need at least 1 form of photo id to open a bank account. My dad recently changed his and had to take his passport as well as a utility bill to prove his address.

Yup - I've been banking with the same bank since September 1965 both in person and online.

Two months ago I opened a small savings account with them in the same branch and I still had to provide photo ID and a utility bill to prove my address.
I've known the 40 year old branch manager since the day he was born and he went to school with my son.
I still had to comply with the rules. :D

This isn't true for all banks.

I have banked with Loyds for many years, this year I wanted some separate accounts away from them.

I now have a Santander and first direct account. All done online and no photo needed. Both up and running within 24 hours.

Surprised at the age restrictions on the last three P.O.I. requirements.
