Stripping a poly neck?

Hi all,

I've got a jazz neck with a horrible orange David Dickinson poly gloss which I'm wanting to remove. As well as the looks, it feels pretty sticky and I much prefer satin finishes.

What's the best way to do this? I'm thinking sanding with about 320 first to get to bare wood,
then 1000+ to smooth? The neck has binding which has poly on-would I be ok sabding this too? Rosewood board so don't need to deal with frets etc.

Cheers in advance
Chris

I'd imagine that you'd be at it quite a while if you started out with 320. I'd carefully get the majority of the finish off with something like 150/180 then as soon as you get to bare wood, start going up the grades - 240>320 etc. the binding should be fine sanded too.

Yes - I agree with Roland.

Necks are generally much easier to sand down than bodies and are also usually as hard as nails (except mahogany ones) so you can stop with the coarse in time as you get down to the wood. Take care with the binding - ever so easy to sand too quickly as it is usually MUCH softer than the wood.

Pics?

Hi Andy,

Sorry for the delay, only just seen this. Might be a few weeks before I attempt this. The neck, along with the body, are going to the tech on Tuesday as there's a gap and I'm getting a veneer put in there so it's all tight. Once I get it back I'll start work. I've put a few pics on to show you the current state of it. Not a fan of tinted necks, so it'll just be clear nitro going on once it's been stripped. Cheers
