Variety in your setlist

I've been looking at the latest setlist for a wedding tonight, and it's occured to me that we do a fair spread of music as part of our normal 2/3-set evening.

I'm curious to know if any other function/covers bands operate on such wide parameters?

Here's a rundown of some of the artists whose songs we play (and I mean play as closely as we can, rather than do a 'rock version' of them, or whatever) - these are in no particular order, and I'm sure you can guess which particular songs they'll be:

Avicii
Pharrell
Bon Jovi
Daft Punk
Johnny Cash
Nirvana
Guns and Roses
Luther Vandross
The Eagles
The Pogues
The Dubliners/Trad Irish
ACDC
Bruno Mars
Van Halen
Streophonics
Peter Gabriel
Michael Buble
Journey
Stevie Wonder
Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Police
Doobie Brothers
Green Day
REM
The Smiths
Toto
James
Oasis

Are we just ADD/daft? :D

Always depends. We do what we do, so people will get our take on stuff or not book us.

I am not a juke box and have no interest in salvishly copying a record or learning bass beyond giving it a quick
listen to see where it is going. We make what we do work within the confines of our line-up or abilities.

We pick songs that we like first and foremost. We do a couple of modern day standards but they seem
to have become standards thru the time we have played them. If we had thought that of them at the time, we probably
wouldn't have entertained them.
So, I don't think we are popular for the songs we play... maybe that is why nobody comes to our gigs
After this very busy summer, I'll be suggesting we re-vamp our set with 10-12 new tracks and 4 originals.

Punters... who'd have them ??

My main function band does everything from disco, funk, pop and soul 'loud guitar' gigs to acoustic gigs with acoustic guitar, upright bass, percussion doing jazz and latin tunes, including some regular 'pop' songs that we've latinised ").

I think having versatility just adds to your chances of a regular workload.

Ours is a bit less wide than that - I still think it's pretty varied though. I'd gladly add more variety if it wasn't for our guitarist being a bit closed minded at times and our lack of a keyboard player

I am torn on this, our current trio does a wide range of stuff, Guy Mitchell to Billy Idol for example! The stuff that everyone does is the stuff the audience like, to us they are often boring songs we dont want to play then when the people get up and dance I think to myself I would rather play those songs than a good thought out mix of unusual stuff to bored faces. Free - Alright now and Queen - Tie your Mother Down go down a treat at every gig for example, I refuse to play sex on fire now though.

Yep I agree, thats two weddings worth IMO :)

How long do you guys play at a wedding? Pretty standard to do 8pm to Midnight up here in Scotland, with a break for the evening buffet.

Everyone I've ever done has been maybe 2x40, sometimes 3x40 though the last set usually runs on to maybe an hour. There's usually a disco too though.

We're booked for our first wedding with our new 'acoustic' line-up in 3 weeks time, we're asked to play for an hour early evening while everyone's arriving and talking etc. There's a disco on later for the main bit.

There's typically no disco up here - just a band. Good money to be made - some bands charging 2 grand - but playing 50 songs is hard work!

I left my main function band about 3 years ago but we used to do an hour then a 20 minute break, another hour to finish. If the gig went well that last hour could become 1 and half hours with encores, requests as long as they were up and dancing we would keep playing. You have to leave the DJ something to do to earn half of what the band got for setting up a Maplins PA and a few lights haven't you?

We don't ever do any more than 2x 1 hrs.
1st set is typically 45 mins and the second will be 45mins-1 hr.

Doesn't matter whether it is a wedding, party or whatever.. and we don't change the set
to suit altho we tend to drop Talking Head;s number.
Basically our pub set thinking transfers out into all our other gigs as that is generally how we
get them. We may use an agent or two but only if they have seen us, but we don't get gigs
from a web search...they are all recommendations, I think.

I'm torn between a variety in a set..whatever that really means, and the standard fare round here
which is pretty much a busking set.

And a busking set is mostly made up of the songs you've played in your formative years
and you'll know them straight off. Check the key and off you go..

Well I agree we are mad, but weddings, golf club or charity balls / Masonic dinners- we play typically hour and a half first set unless food or a raffle stops us with about 15 min break to change from monkey suits to coloured shirts then back for another hour or so. We have been known if the dinner over runs not to break at all and have done two hours straight on many occasions. The wife works out the sets for the particular function we are playing, we do skip numbers depending on the crowd but also have an extras list to swap out those that may not work on the night. The set published above was largely chosen by the bride from our master set on the website. Which is always a bit scary
