Hohner Jack Electrics

I picked up a Hohner Jack yesterday which needs a bit of tlc. Im waiting for some strings before I can try it properly but when I put a new battery in for the active circuit there is a rectangular metal box next to where the battery goes. It has a plastic crosshead screw in it and I've not seen in a bass before. It may be a stupid question but does any one know what it is/does? Thanks

I always had a soft spot for them and the b2s back in the early 90s. I needed a cheap back up bass and saw this. It needs a bit of love and came with no strings which I'm just waiting on strings direct to deliver. Once I've got it working ill stick ip some pics.

Part 2 of the saga is that my strings arrived yesterday, so ive got to play it and passive it sounds great but the active circuit doesnt work.

The tone controls are loose so that may have something to do with it but all the wires look intact and the light comes on when you flick the active/passive switch. I've tried turning the plastic screw in the metal box to no avail. Is there anything else to check? Cheers
