Hello.

It's probably my midlife crisis, but I bought a bunch of used instruments. I played Tuba in college. So I can read sheet music.

My friends and I started a band called the Unpretentious Pretenders.

I purchased an Ibanez acoustic bass.

We get together and "pretend" to play. It's been fun, and now I'd like to gain some skills.

I've started watching YouTube videos. I am starting to try now to purposely play notes.

I brought my bass to London while I work here for the month.

Would be nice to meet others while here.

Judy

Hi winegodess,

Welcome to basschat, and to the UK
Hope you get to meet other BC members
I'm a long way off, in South Wales - otherwise I'd invite you along to a jam session or open-mic

You could look for some open-mic nights near where you're staying?
That could be a good way to meet other musicians

Enjoy your stay in the UK
and enjoy your playing too

Marc

PS. I've got an Ibanez electro-acoustic bass, and I love it!

EDIT: PPS, there are some good youtube videos out there,
but also try playing along with tunes on the radio, or favourite songs on your iPod etc

Hey Judy, and welcome!

I hope you'll find BC a friendly and informative place, and if you do, you might as well know that the ToU of BC include some lines about not really having to unsubscribe when one leaves that London again.

As to meeting others, enough bassists are expected to stand in line to meet a wine goddess, but if not, as London is close to water, you could swim some and meet me here in Norway. It's not really a long swim. Just keep the bass over your head so it keeps dry. I have two amps, so you should be OK in that department. :)

Enjoy BC and that London!

bert

PS
In the mean time, here's an oldie I still love, possibly about your town:
