Santa wants to empty his sack for me I reckon!

Must be a fiver.
Must be a Jazz type bass.
Active or passive.
Try before I buy.
£300-1600.

Top of the list and budget USA Fender V Deluxe, Oly White, rosewood, blocks and bound. But I've never found one with a B I like, if I do I'll grab it :gas:

Lakland 55-60 Good B nice build quality, not a Fender.

Squier Jazz vintage modified, Dont know much, tell me more?

Mayones Jabba Classic, maybe.

Lakland 55-14 new model USA built J and MM coil switchable, active passive etc
But its not a Fender or a Jazz as such?

What am I missing and where should I be shopping? PMT Birmingham, guitar guitar Birmingham and Bass Direct are my nearest shops.

Any ideas? :)

Not on the list, but how about one of these? Obviously we'd need to find ACG owners near you.

Sandberg TM5? Bassdirect have a couple of these in. Played the 4 string version up and Great British Bass lounge up in Manchester and it was really, really nice.

Posted on the Fender trouble thread so sorry to repeat

The American Deluxe is the only one I'd look at from Fender. I've played a couple and I think you can get them to where you want them set-up wise ( whihc you'd dame well expect  ) and the finishing touches or block and bound on RW is the way to go. My next best will have this spec...and it may well be a J5 U.s Deluxe if I don't commsion a Sei..
I would put the finish up there with a quality MM S5. They may come across as a bit chunky, so check the weight, if that matters to you, but I think they are very solidly built and finished from what I've seen. I think just shy of £1500 new is just about right. Any higher and they'd lose out to others.
If I saw the right spec for £1000 SH, I'd be very interested.

The Jabba looks good...
What about X-otic ..?? their spec is good.

Or, hang out for a Sei, but oily white is going to be a problem..
Having said that...I've got one

My last jazz was CAR, I Was never that keen, I don't like gold hardware or pearloid either, other than that it's perfect, lol

Interesting what you say about the USA deluxe though do I'm still up for that I think.

Xotic are really good to play and the finish is excellent, bit over budget though I guess, saying that it's only money isn't it :)

My thinking is get Martin P to make me one in the spec I want...which is sunburst, red tort, j pickups, sliver hardware
and block and bound RW, P neck dims... or pick up as close as damn it same thing in American Deluve J5.
I know you wont have Sei quality but then the price would be nigh on double, I'm calculating, for that.
Having said that...a deposit down now, gives a year to save up the rest..???

So, in the meantime, back to the ads... I know where there is a red wine AD J5..very nice..!!

Oddly, I'm in exactly the same boat as StingrayPete. I really fancy a five and have been trying to narrow down the options before I try and hunt some down to try.

I have a couple of four string Jazzes - both Fenders - and I like them both, although I'm not too bothered about the name on the headstock - but if I'm going to pay over a thou, there has to be a noticeable improvement in quality, tone and comfort for me to justify it to myself.

One name not mentioned on here so far is Overwater. There are a couple in the FS section on here although neither does it for me colour-wise. Thoughts?

Thus far, my wish list is black block inlays, maple neck, Olympic White with White guard or CAR with white guard. That Sei is beautiful - but then a white Squier VM also fits the bill looks wise and is only £300 - plus an after market pickguard..... So I have to ask myself whether I'm prepared to pay £1800 for that Sei.

Or an American Deluxe.....

So, what's the view on Overwater?

I've had both of these...

American Deluxe Jazz Bass V - http://www.fender.co...-bwb-pickguard/
American Standard Jazz Bass V - http://www.fender.co...color-sunburst/

Moved them both on - this is so subjective of course. Personally, I liked the Standard a lot more than the Deluxe and, actually, it's one of the few basses I wish I hadn't sold. I'd go out and try as many as possible mate... you've got me thinking now though - I want another Jazz V.

And I'm 100% sure that there are far superior Jazz Basses out there but personally speaking, and I know I'm very blinkered here, I love and want the Fender decal on the headstuck.

That is the type of thing I'm looking for.

As for Overwaters..they can be very nice as well...
Again, like the Deluxe, they tend to sit very substantially on you and it feels 'big' in your hands
so you know you have an instrument to get to grips with...which I like.
Was very impressed with one I saw recently... looked great, sounded Great.
Depends what the price was as to whether it would go on my list tho..

Nice - but I've got a real hankering for a maple neck with black block inlays.

Olympic White is still in the frame but now I've seen the picture of that red Sei at the Bass Gallery, I'm leaning more towards the red.

That Sei would be perfect if it had a maple neck with the blocks....

Problem is, there aren't any off-the-shelf basses that exactly match what I want (the Squier is the closest). I could get one made but I'm not sure I could justify two and a half thou for an Overwater - or a similar kind of price for a Sei. Realistically, my budget is probably the same as StingrayPete's - a max of £1600.

I'll try and get my hands on a Squier to try and see what that's like - I know the 4-string VM's get a lot of respect on here. If I get on with it, that might keep the GAS at bay while I keep my eyes open for the perfect Candy Apple/Maple/Blocks combo in the marketplace....

I went through this last week and actually gave up looking for a 5 string Jazz. Nothing really rocked my boat, so i got a cheap(er)Yamaha for now.

I have a VM PJ and as nice as it is ive never really loved it. Maybe its the cheap wood or the rough edges on the sides of the neck. Compared to my CV's it seems a bit lower down the scale. This was the reason i didnt go tor the VM jazz V.

Another one i looked at was the Fender Modern Player Jazz 5. This seemed like a really good choice but the one i picked up (and this was just a 4 string) was very heavy.

As my budget was quite low, and i really wanted a passive bass, i decided to just get a Yamaha 5 string (completely the opposite of what i was looking for) and wait until i see if i get on with the extra string (again), then probably get a Fender MIA jazz 5 next year.

I did have a Lakland DJ5 a few years ago. Lovely bass but i never really liked the tone. It was warmer and deeper than the 4 string Jazz basses i had at the time. I wish i still had it though :-)

EDIT: I realise the above doesn't make sense. The idea was to get the Yamaha now and leave a gap for the perfect 5 string jazz, rather than getting something that will do the job but i would want to replace. The Yamaha sits in its own space in the collection.

I really really wouldn't take notice of an all black bass.... totally wrong IMO..
but MP has such a great eye that he can make it work.

Not sure what the exact price is but a Sei for that sort of money is a LOT of bass...IMO.

I have a fretless OW J5, just the most tone monster of anything I've owned! If I were in the market for a fretted 5, I'd be looking at one of those two myself.. :)

The Squier V DeLuxe is a pretty cool bass! They made it in white, so you may still find one in that colour. Very wide neck, 19mm spacing at the bridge, it is a chunky neck, but I found it pretty comfy. Deeper profile than a Lakland 5502, which is about the nicest 5 string neck I ever tried.
