mattbass6 Posted November 1, 2014 Share Posted November 1, 2014 Hi gang, I've just bought a second hand Squier VM Jazz bass 5. I want to change the bridge for a higher mass bridge but I have no idea what to get. The bridge on it currently, is a 6 hole model but most of the bridges I have been looking at are mainly 5. Any advice as to whether the 5 hole bridges are OK for this bass or, do you know of any 6 hole replacement bridges. Thanks in advance. This is roughly what Leo had in mind, that you put very little effort into plucking. It sounds far more upright-like, particularly with a well run-in set of TI Jazz Flats. We're attracted to them because they look all lovely and chunky, like a fat little puppy but in actual fact the mass of the thing makes very little difference. Babicz are an exception as they have re-designed their saddles so that more of the string is in contact with the saddle. How much difference this actually makes in the real world though I don't know. You could probably tell the difference with an oscilloscope and some crocodile clips attached to your downstairs parts though. Now if the actual bridge plate had a larger surface area (not mass), this [u]could[/u] make a difference, as would having the strings through the body and anchored in the back. JPJ Posted December 4, 2014 Share Posted December 4, 2014 Having experimented with Badass, other high mass units such as the Schaller ones, and finally monorail bridges, I have come to the conclusion that the bridge contribution to overall tone is in fact so minimal that in a live setting, you will not notice the difference. I did suspect that the monorails were robbing me of something (couldn't quite decide what that something was) but it turned out to be the eq circuit.
