TB is very good for info and i read it a a lot. But too much stupidity goes on there for my liking, such as the silly arguments, flaming of people, The club rubbish. And the fact most measurements on there i have to convert to metric haha.

I guess it's just because it's been quite easy to establish myself here as "that f'n rabid Gibson guy" without having to be part of a club ;)

Neepheid you are Rabid Gibson Guy Club member No1.... :P

Maybe I'll give it a go... I'm not convinced it would be the same without knowing a little about the personality of people who post, it puts peoples comments in context if you've learnt a little about them from their previous posts.

If you have a different opinion than the mods, they ban you from the site. Very childish.

In 2007 I had a warning for using the word 'tits' on TB. This wasn't the main reason for opening BC but it was one of them!

Funnily enough, BC's forbear 'Bassworld' was created off the back of a thread on Talkbass called 'British Bassists' or something. We thought "We should have our own forum".

I rarely visit any more but I've always found it a friendly and informative forum.

............

So I use it more as a fount of knowledge rather a social or community site. And you do have to filter out the crazies a bit more... as usual there are a lot of opinions put forward as fact, so you get quite good at seeking out the truth...

I don't find it any better or worse than BC to be honest and I use it more to find out about things bass and like here I try to stay out of the heated threads.

I find TB too big and unwieldy, that and sarcasm is frowned upon.
[/quote]

I've obviously not been sarcastic enough yet!
I joined recently - years of reading things on there and it got to the point with some things of finding I wanted to ask questions or get advice. For specialist stuff it's great - the in-depth geeky side of it.
The other side like the off topic I've never ventured into, and the sales forum is of no interest as all the stuff tends to be on another continent.
Beware though they are even worse than us for "fashions" in what's the hot gear to have.

I don't know about the BGs but the DB people are a great crowd. A lot of knowledge, some of them ace players and a great resource. Sometimes the level of invective is impressive. Through the site I found Acoustic Image, Upton, FDeck and a lot more. My pounds have been going across the pond.

i expect that would be because DB draws in a different crowd. Your not going to get some idiot chav types playing DB, although the thought amuses me.

Are you insinuating that those who choose to play electric bass are idiots and chavs..?
If so I'll thud you up the bleedin' hooter, you four-eyed git. :D :P ;)

I think I've been a member since around 2003.

In the main I find it a great source of genuinely knowledgeable information. There are some guys over there who really know their stuff. If I'm after a 'definitive' view on something bass related then it's the first place I look.

Thanks for the compliment, Twincam, and your probably right on that one. But in fifties - yes, I was there - before amplification came in there were a lot of double bass fakers around. They still surface periodically.

I am also a member of TalkBass but only subscribe to the DB forums. Like Roger/bassace says, there's a pretty good community there with some very useful advice (the leading edge amplification technology for DBs, eg, FearFul and MAS stuff pretty much all comes from the US) and it also widens the net for buying/selling DB gear (as the number of active DB'ers on BassChat, while growing nicely, is still not that large). I steer clear of the electric bass forums so I wouldn't know if they are as rabid as the Rick and Ernie Ball forums (allegedly) are

I never received a warning on TB, but I often quietly roll my eyes and bite my tongue at ridiculous actions/statements by "moderators". It really smells funny, their style. Or maybe is the sycophantic attitude of some towards moderators that smells funny. Regardless, if that is a contributing factor to the creation of what is now BassChat... I LOVE YOU, MODERATORS OF TALKBASS!!!!

Ha!

I'm still active on TalkBass, 'though. It does have a lot to offer, if nothing else because it's a much larger place. The idiots tend to be more visible, or loud, or both, but just like here... it's part of the view. Learn to ignore them, and both forums have a lot of good things to offer. Exercise discretion, that's all.
