There is a difference in the pickup Warren, these are ceramic rather than the alnico used in stingrays. They sound different, but still great of course. Just don't expect a stingray tone.

I had standard USA HH sterling, compared to USA stingray, sterling had a little bit colder sound, this model is very similar to classic stingray sound, maybe because of 2 band preamp, laquer neck..etc..
