KT88s - TAD vs Marshall

Salt on your Bass?

Hi All,

Making a decision on my laney Nexus to either get a full change of valves (to Marshalls as used in the VBA 400) or to get 3 TADs replaced. Money is pretty similar.

Wondered what experience or difference there was between the two (if any).

Making a decision in the next 24 hrs and really not experienced with this kinda stuff!!

While there are many brands of valves, it must not be forgotten there are only five factories in the world making valves, so whatever you buy it's originated from one of these. I'm not sure who makes the TAD stuff but the Marshall are mostly Shugang from China. Different people say different things about them regarding sound, reliability and value. The shugangs are getting good reviews even from the hifi guys although that's a completely different ballgame from battering the crap out of them with a bass. Personally I've been using Sovteks which are cheap but seem to hang together pretty well, (only had one failure out of a quad in two years). It's worth searching the net for valve suppliers outside of the music industry market as there's some good deals to be had.
In short I'd say beware the hype.

which valves are the TAD ones? as far as i'm aware, the laney nexus has 3x 12ax7, 1x 12BH7 and 8x KT88's, the KT88's are in quad's i think so should be replaced as quads, personally i would phone Watford valves and ask them what they suggest, they seem to have 2 options available on their website, tesla at 100 for a matched quad or svetlana at 160 for a matched quad.
