Luminlay Markers

Another Luminlay convert here :) I managed to get lost a couple of times on a dark stage with my maple neck Sire V7, so I jumped on the old net and ordered some side dot inlay (3mm, green with black outer ring). Ive just spent an hour or so drilling holes and tapping and supergluing and trimming -- obviously the final fine trim and sanding/filing is still to come, but suffice to say I am well pleased with the results so far. I was so chuffed I even put a new dot at fret 1, where there hadn't been a dot before :D
I'd say to anyone toying with getting some, do it. I am seriously considering doing this to all my basses now.
Before:

After (pending final finish):

Been shortsighted for years....Can't see the neck of my bass with my specs on, can't see the band with my specs off.

One is a bonus the other ...

Use two basses at gigs one has a rosewood neck the other is maple. Thinking about getting both "Luminared" up, maybe one in blue the other in green with the twelfth fret double dot in opposite colours, could buy two packs and job done !

You people that have installed these...which colour stands out best against a maple or rosewood neck... or does it not make any difference..would love to hear your opinions

and while I'm at it (not owning a drill press) does this chaps method of installation have any serious drawbacks (please be warned it does go on a bit)

Thanks Uglydog for your post and everybody else interesting stuff Thanks

I ordered from Rothko and Frost the white ones as my bass has a dark neck.
I still needed to be able to see them in the daylight.
Even with a very strong LED light source they did NOT hold a charge for more tham a couple of minutes.
Happy with the communication from the company but dissapointed with the product.

That is exactly my experience. R&F were great, the things do not hold a charge for more than a couple of minutes. Sadly, by the time I paid someone to put them in and finish the neck again I am quite far into the process financially. I totally regret it and one day will have to pay someone else to put dark markers in again.

The R&F ones are nowhere near as good as Luminlay.
I have 2 ACG's with genuine Luminlay and they are great. Hold a charge for a 45 min set easily and will still have some residual light after that. the first time I used them after the first set the lights were switched off and you could still see them glow.
I have another bass that I had R&F ones put on and then had them changed to the genuine article as they were useless.

Normal LEDs aren't very good at charging up luminescent materials - you want to give them a blast of UV light. You can get a little torch for a couple of quid. edit: like the one down there! v

I use the bargain-basement alternative to Luminlay - some glow stickers (sold for putting on light switches) chopped up into strips narrow enough to not get in the way of my fingers :D

I put the Luminlay in my fretless and they work fine. I seem to have lost the blue led mini torch, but find the torch light on my phone does the same job. Failing that, the leds on a Genz-Benz Shuttle do the same.

I got a pack of these off eBay and have one in each case and a couple spare as I lost my mini torch(es) as well.

I did this with all my Bass Collection basses but used a hole punch, the type for punching holes in paper, to get them nice and round and jobs a good un.

Genius! I might have a hole punch somewhere in the drawer of things I haven't used since leaving school... along with a compass, protractor, set square, fountain pen...

I have just tried to buy some Luminlay stuff but cannot get through the paypal page. It keeps telling me that the exchange rate has changed and asking me to review the payment but will not let me through. Does anyone have any of the stuff with a black edging on it?

I'm using these on the side of my fretless fingerboard and they do the job great :

I used something similar but the glue wasn't great and they started sliding off their place, and some came off relatively easily.
How 'solid' are these once you stick them? I have a couple of dark fingerboards I'd love to have some larger white-ish side markers on. Right now I just put a spot of tippex on them as a temporary measure

Same problem with me. I had toyed with the idea of drilling a small hole and putting the stickers in and then drop-filling with clear varnish. This would make them permanent but I don't know if it would have any impact on the ability to charge.
Also I guess if you are going to start drilling holes, you may as well install Luminlay.

The Glotec ones stick well and haven't moved on me. I don't actually touch them as I play though as I'm a thumb on the back of the neck player rather than thumb over the top.

They're great - aren't they :) And they're just as good in daylight. These are the ones on gelfin's Mouradian-style:
