PA Speakers very dull.

Hi all, I bought a secondhand PA with a Gigrac 600 amp (tested with my other cheap PA speakers and works fine). The speakers that came with the PA are Peavey Messenger Pro speakers

When I use them with the Gigrac amp OR my old amp they sound really muddy and quieter than I would have thought too. I don't know a great deal about PA so wonder if I am wiring them wrong somehow? My other cheap PA speakers sounds great so I have something to compare them with.

These Peavey speakers have 2 inputs and 2 outputs (2 x 1/4 jack and 2 x speakon cables). I don't have any speakon cables so wonder if they are required to make them work properly?

Any advice appreciated.

It sounds to me that the compression (HF) drivers have blown.

At not too loud a level play some full range music through them and put your ear near the HF units and see if you can hear the treble. (can I say that here).

2 ins and 2 outs usually means that they can be daisy chained with other speakers, but as they are 4ohm be careful if you do this.

We have Peavey Sub and Pro 15 speakers - the tweeters are utter crap! They're a nice top speaker otherwise. I'll try and find out what I replaced ours with, the originals went through 3 sets of diaphragms but the latest ones have been great. I'll pull them out sometime over the next couple of days and see what they are.

Upgrade the hf drivers and you'll end up with a good pair of speakers.

F****** useless handles notwithstanding, of course!

Edit: I replaced them with these and they've been great.

Outperformed the originals in every department.
