Sterling SUB Ray 4

If there's a prize for the most annoying question, this might scoop it.

The aforementioned bass comes in a finish called Trans Blue Satin. By all accounts, it looks like the first image, below.

I think it's rather nice, judging by that pic.

So I'm shopping online looking for the best price, and of course the exceptional Thomann is by far the best value deal. They have a gallery unlike any other for this bass, and it looks like the second image, below.

To me, that is simply stunning. I can't take my eyes off this bass. It's my wallpaper on my phone. It's my whatsapp profile pic. I'm showing this to everyone and being met with oohs and aahs from people who don't typically do 'feigned ethusiasm'.

But no other pic can I find of this finish looking like it does in Thomann's gallery. Everywhere else I look, the colour appears flatter, more bland and more like a plain ol' Royal Blue. Which was fine a minute ago, but doesn't cut the mustard any longer.

The question - after a long and convoluted set-up - is this:

Has anyone seen this finish 'in the flesh'? Which of the two pics does it looks like?

I can't get to a music shop which stocks this bass anytime soon, and need to know.

Help! I'm in love!

I'd say the more likely explanation of the variation in blue is down to the white balance of each digital image - a common issue encountered when it's left to the camera to decide what type of illumination is present (when left set to AWB - Auto White Balance). One image looks a lot warmer than the other (the one you like, that's the one I'd get too) but until someone sees an example 'in the flesh' it's hard knowing which is closer to the truth.

The pic on the left looks more like blue pearl with lots of light on it, they are really sparkly! From the walnut subs I've seen I'd expect it to more like the satin finish on the right. Check out the ebmm porn thread, me and ern500evo both have blue pearl basses,I think there is a pic of them together in there?

I have to have that bass, in that colour. I don't care if it's a Sub, a Ray34, a Stingray or if it's made of mouldy cheese - I'm in love with a plank of wood and a shade of paint, and I can't compromise.. Doesn't matter if it's £300 or £3,000. I am telling you that I will eat the grass in my garden if it helps me to fund it quicker. I have gone over to the bad place.

Well mcnach will be along to tell you to get a John East 3 band which would be cool but I think a guy on ebay sells the 2 eq quite cheap, theres not much to them really.

Is that the Retrovibe Stinger preamp? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Retrovibe-Stinger-Classic-MM-Stingray-Bass-EQ-pre-amp-2-band-pre-EB-circuit-/281130564526

Is it better than the stock SUB preamp?

Colin - I was all set to get the honeyburst, but then I saw the blue and fell in love. The honeyburst looks cracking in both the 4 and the 5 though.

Pete - I will have a gander on the bay d'E. A quick google search saw plenty mention of the John East, and another one which appears to be the handiwork of a guy named Tommo Richards. I take it these add a bit more authenticity to the sound, but are there other benefits?

Anyone know if the latest Subs still suffer from the preamp clipping mentioned on the early models?

I have played one at a local store and would have bought it if it had a maple fingerboard. I got a Mint Green (semi-glossy ) with maple neck. It is a Musicians Friend exclusive colour. The blue one I played was like that row of basses pictured except darker. (darker than Lake Placid Blue) I like the transparent finishes a lot.
