I never thought of using a p or j retro again (not because is not good). I had 3 bass and the p and j is passive and my musicman bongo is active. I realise I never actually play on the bongo apart from forcing myself to because is paid good money for the bass. I finally decided that I no longer needed it because the P and J suits the type of music I play better so I'm parting that away but I also like to keep 1 active option so decided to add p-retro. pete.young Posted December 8, 2014 Share Posted December 8, 2014 I just wanted to make sure you're aware that the P-Retro doesn't give you a full active tone stack for the treble and bass controls. It uses the passive treble and bass controls as an input to the active circuit. That allows you to boost the mids, boost treble and bass together (I find it easier to think of this as a mid-cut) and have a bass frequency boost or bright boost.. It's a great bit of kit which really adds a lot to a standard precision, but if you want full active treble and bass you might be better off with a U-retro, or an external pre-amp. The good is that i don't need to mod the bass to put a 9v battery and the bad is how long will the internal battery last as the time goes. The U-Retro is something i was looking at as well but the bass don't have any room to put the 9v battery without routing the battery placement. The eq is a little different than a normal pre amp but I find it powerful and gives me a whole range of tones.
