muteing a string.

Play the open E and kill it with your left hand when you want to mute it. Keep your left hand in the position you are going to play the D. I,m afraid there is no easy way to tell you (as will everybody else on here will agree) that it will come with practice.

I assume you're playing fingerstyle? I just tried it and found the easiest way was to be fretting the D on the A, hit the E with your index finger, quickly mute it with your left thumb and pluck the two D notes, the first with your middle finger, the second with your index finger again.

Hit the E then the 2 D notes on the A string and after each D your RH plucking finger should come to rest on the E string, thus muting it.

Unless you use a pick, I don't see how you have a problem with that.

With a pick you'll have to let a non fretting LH finger slightly overlap and mute the E string.
