You have to love a set that has such an easy home straight. I kind of have to pay attention during The Jean Genie to get the nail the gaps as it's the same riff over and over, but Ziggy is so easy to play and such a fun line that I'll never get bored with it. I love all things Bowie and having done various covers of Bowie over the years the one song that nauseates me more than any other is Ziggy... If it comes on the radio I have to change stations. The guitar riff feels like a bears claw being dragged over my exposed spine. I hope the song never has this affect on you but I will be very surprised Id you never get bored of it. Very sensibly, Bowie wasn't locked into being a tribute band of his early self so I'd go for the later arrangements and Gail Ann Dorsey's take on his numbers. hiram.k.hackenbacker Posted April 25, 2015 Author Share Posted April 25, 2015 There enough in the Ziggy line to keep me interested, but as you say, I'll see how I feel about it after I've played it 1000 times. Although The Ship is a pub, the gig is a ticket only thing upstairs, so it's kind of not a pub gig at a pub, if you see what I mean. We're selecting different song arrangements from across the decades, but for the most part it's Gail's lines. Just wish I could sing Under Pressure anywhere near as well as she can. One talented lady. I'm aware she's moved on from MM, but I don't think she will ever part company with her Marilyn Stingray which allegedly has been with her on every tour since she was given it back in the day. There are plenty of mid sized venues that can't fill their rosta so very good cover bands or tributes are the way to go. Not entirely sure I like this from a certain POV but it is what it is and you have the opportunity to get up and running with a ticketed gig. You can always do the better pubs which cater for tickets...and more and more do, IMO, or are certainly open to them rather than the free gig fare.. I would think you could price yourselves at £750-1000 for a 350 capacity room. Still got to sell the tickets and be good enough, mind, but definitely the way to go, IMO. The recording was very much just for posterity and not intended to be used by us for any sort of promotional effort, but it turned out so well we thought we would have a tinker around with it to see how good we could get it. Anyone familiar with the Bowie catalogue will know that this song has been performed in various guises over the years. Our version is a heavy nod towards the BBC gig from 2000. Given that it was our very first gig, I'm fairly chuffed with it. More songs in due course. 'Stay' isn't a walk in the park by any means and you've nailed the sound and feel of it completely. Some very good playing and performances, too. Brave choice for a cover, I'd say - it's not one of Bowie's better-known songs. Relatively speaking, of course... [/quote] It was taken straight out of the desk into a Mac. The problems we had were that it's not the biggest venue in the world and the drum kit was right on top of the main vox so there was a lot of bleed through. On top of that, the drummer also does backing vocals so had a similar issue with his mic. The kit was captured using only two overheads and a bass drum mic. The rest of the back line was fairly straight forward, but it was time consuming to get to something we were all happy with. Thanks for the kind comments. My wife says that Stay is not one of her favourite Bowie tracks, but we all love playing it, so I think it will be a permanent fixture :-) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
