Hipshot Bass Extender Keys, Opinions?

Hey folks

What are your opinions on the Hipshot extender keys? Has anyone had any issues with them? From what I've read they seem to be quite good, the thing putting me of at the moment is the price! £90 for the black GB7 on bass direct! They seem to be going for ~ £50 in the states but postage is costly as are the import duties.

Cheers.

They are expensive, but it depends how often you're going to use them. I only use mine for one song in our set, but it's an important song and I wanted to be able to play it without spending too much time retuning my E string. And I got it for £50 on the Bay.

But I've trained myself to tune from E to D (and back) quickly now, so maybe give that a go and think about it again. :)

I think it's a gimmick. I can re tune in seconds, so why spend so much so that you can drop tune one string for a couple of songs?

I wonder has anyone ever put 4 of these on? Then you could retune the whole guitar down and back. Is this possible? I don't know

May I introduce you to Michael Manring:

I've had them on a couple of basses, I have found them useful but not essential.

I did find I was getting an intonation problem on one of my Dingwalls. Easily sorted though, it just needs setting up correctly, which when you know how, is very easy.

Take a look at this vid for step to step instructions:

Thanks guys, we do play in two different tunings and I've always used two guitars, which has never been a big issue, but to be able to use just one would be a lot easier. I'd probably still take two basses, but at least one would be a spare .

I apologise for my ignorance of the Hipshot. Consider me converted ! ;)

I love them. I have them on my 4 strings and am going to put them on my 5 strings as well for a bit of low A action.

But do you have them on all 4 strings? That capo set up is no use to me. Transposing all our material onto another fret where all my major notes would be on minor frets would confuse the hell out of me and as I'm the singer, I can't afford to be concentrating too much on what I'm playing.

As long as your headstock has enough room to fit them you should be fine. Not sure how the neck would handle the changes in tension though. I think that's why Michael Manring uses a carbon neck.
