6-string flatwounds

Hi chaps,

My google-fu is weak.

I'm looking to get some flat-wounds for my 6-string, and I've been recommended DRs by several friends. However I'm struggling to actually find a 6-string set.

Perhaps I should get a 5-string set and try and find a separate high c string?

What's your thoughts?

Cheers,
Matt

Status make 6 string flatwound sets >> http://www.status-graphite.com.
Have heard good things about LeBella flats, but like Chris, I'm really not sure where you can get them here in the UK.
The Thomastik ones are wonderful, but the low low tension might not be something you'll get on with and they are hellishly expensive >> http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomastik_jf_346.htm

You can add high C and low B to LaBellas from Bass Direct http://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/LaBella_strings.html or get a 6 string TI set from them http://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Thomastik.html

Wish I'd known that before i spent £50 on a la bella 5 set! They are the flexible ones though :)

The Low Tension ones feel very different from the standard La Bella flats. Much closer to Thomastik in feel.

I know it's different type of six string but when I wanted strings for my Bass VI I ordered them direct from LaBella. Just order all the individual strings you need to make your set, cheaper than a preamp packed set in the uk even after postage.
All on their website so no need for an expensive phone call.

No problems fitting them and they sound good - a lot better than the old ones. A little hard to compare being flatwounds vs roundwounds but they suit the fretless much better I think.

How do they feel, tension wise ?

A little looser, but not floppy.

<--- Not an expert. Can you tell?

It was a bit of a silly question really, but thanks for answering anyway.

Carvin also do a 6 string set that are actually La Bellas but in unbranded bags - a lot cheaper as well!

Stupid question possibly, what's the tension and tone like on these ?

:)

More tension than Thomastiks, which are what I use if I need flats, but not as high as some I've tried.

Tone is pretty round and fat to my ears. Quite a vintage sound that works well on a P bass with the tone pot backed off.

I'm not sure if there any left in a 6 string set because our shop isn't placing any new Carvin string orders. They come from the guitar division who only sell direct from San Diego now (amps are now a separate division and still available here).
