I've been through a lot of basses over the past 20 years but my '64 Jazz still remains my go to bass.

I've almost always favoured J's over P's and a few years back acquired my 'dream' bass - a '63J in sea foam green.

All original apart from being Refinished in the 70's but my local luthier thinks it was originally sea foam. It now has dings, cigarette burn marks, fading where stickers have been on it etc.

Very dark rosewood board and a neck to die for, certain the nicest Fender J neck I've ever played.

The day it arrived a certain Paul Turner happened to pop round to drop something off and promptly borrowed it for a week :)

He proclaimed it might just have a better slap tone than his beloved '66 J!

I've gigged it a few times, rehearsed it a lot but never recorded it.

The sad thing is that a long term neck problem means I'm regularly struggling to play 34" scale basses so it may well have to go at some point.

It's increased in value a little each year that I've owned it which kinda justifies keeping it but it just seems a shame that it's not out gigging regularly so maybe it'll finally go this year :(

I had a 1999 MIM Fender Jazz which I upgraded with Nordstrand NJ4 pickups which helped with a weak sound, but I sold it on anyway.

Then 2 years ago I got my Lakland 55-60 and every other bass i've had since has been inferior. It's been gigged and has always excelled. The number of sounds available mean it always finds a way of sound amazing.

I can see a 4 string Fender Jazz in my future (one with a big black F logo), but i'm sick of sunburst.

Just acquired this form a fellow BCer. I'm not a natural Fender fan, but this has the potential to radically change my perceptions.[attachment=190370:Fender Jazz.jpg]

My RW Jazz certainly changed my perceptions
I wasn't particularly a Fender fan before I got mine either

I bought it for one particular band - now I use it most of the time
Lovely basses - enjoy it ead
I couldn't be without mine now :)

I've been more of a jazz bass player than a P bass player over the years.

My first, which I still have, was/is a 1972 black with black scratchplate, rosewood board. Its got a couple of scuff from being well played over the years but othewise its in mint condition & plays beautifully.

I've also got a 1975 maple neck Jazz - the body was originally sunburst but its been stripped & sanded. Its quite a bit heavier than the '72 & has a much hotter output.

My favourite bass & a relatively recent purchase is a '64 Custom Shop Jazz in British Racing Green, with matching headstock, with a mint green scratch plate.

That is gorgeous and my ideal Jazz bass. Love the colour and bet it sounds awesome! Can I ask if you got it in the UK or did you get it from overseas?

My 2003 S1 model soon after I picked it up on eBay. It must have been an early pic as I've had a badass bridge on it for years. I also realise it's picked up a few marks since then too but i bough tit as a player not to stare at. Played it last night at ajam session as it happens.

I've had a couple of other Jazzers, both 90's MiM's, one a standard sunburst, and the other a lovely black deluxe...
Been using Stingrays mainly for last 15 years though, but fancied another Jazz so acquired this 74' last year, has a Gotoh bridge, and EMG's (originals were never on it), which makes it more usable in reality, and just sourced correct black scratch plate for it too..

My main bass type for nearly all of my playing has been a Jazz. First Jazz what I got was a Squier (Japan) E that had been badly abused, so after putting that back together, sticking in a set of Duncans (don't know what model, they were in a box of bits in a music shop), that became my primary instrument.

Alongside it came and went other Jazz basses (the neck never felt quite right compared to the Squier), a Stingray, a Peavey Cirrus 5, a couple of Precisions... And then one night someone "borrowed" it as we were packing up after a gig.

Currently I've got a 2005 Mexican V that I've a love/hate relationship with (it seems to be a damage magnet, usually when I'm not about and others "haven't touched"), and its neck is an absolute pain to keep a decent action with during the summer months.

For many years I was not a fan of Jazz Basses. Then I tried a friends old rusty, manky MIJ Squier and I was converted.

I liked it so much that when I saw the same model on ebay, I bought it.

Since then I've owned a few.

MIJ Geddy Lee

MIJ 62 reissue

MIJ Silver Squier

Standard Indonesian Squier

And a few custom jobs, made up from parts bought on Stratosphere's ebay site.

At the moment I only have the one Jazz, which is the original MIJ Squier I bought so long ago (refinished in Sonic Blue) , with a set of pups out of a Mex 'Road worn' Jazz. It's fitted with a John East J Retro pre amp and is the most versatile bass I've ever owned.

Here is my darling Y.O.B. 1974 Jazz (aka The Family Stone bass). I have recently swapped out the mega heavy ash body which made the bass a hefty 11.7lbs to a wonderful custom made, and period correct, Olympic white body...obviously faded to a cigarrete stained yellow. The body was made by MJT in the USA; I have to say the quality to detail is impecable but then i should think so for £350ish it cost me - stung by import tax too :(. But still, it is a superb light relic with brilliant checking etc etc....most of all it is light (swamp ash), my beauty will now get more regular outings weighing a friendlier 9.1lbs...and she sounds just as sweet as ever. Her first gig will be tomorrow with her new body :D

I have owned a few Jazzes: 68 ( an absolute dog), 2003 MIM Sunburst, very nice, 2006 MIM white, also very nice, 2012 American Special, would have kept this except for financial stress, and now a Squier VM 70s J, which is pretty astounding.
I'm a Precision player through and through, although small hands and, lately, arthritis, mean that that my Precision wears an American Special Jazz neck. So in reality, I'm stuck somewhere in the middle...

A proper J is the one instrument I will have to buy at some point. Truth be told, I am remarkably happy with my Harley Benton, but I do want a proper J at some point.

I guess I too gravitate a bit towards J basses, and I guess one proof is that my BTB1406, while by no means conceptually akin to a J bass, does borrow some important element from it - single coils in a proper J position. Then again, neck through body, 35", laminated neck...

I've played just about any cheap knock off and I am very happy with the Harley Benton. Yet... someday I will get a proper Fender J. Instruments that improve on the original are cool, and I've liked some a lot, but I guess simplicity is really what I am after.

I'm definitely more of a J man than a P man, currently have 5 J's compared to the 2 P's and my go to bass is my '69 Oly White:
