Many thanks to Jim for organising today.
I fell in love with Wood in Black's acg, and York5stringer's "shucker" self build was stunning.

Great to meet you all.
Happy Halloween!

It was good to meet you all today (and meet some familiar faces again too). There were some stunning basses there today too and I can't get over Andy's mahoosive pedal board!

Nice to see the usual suspects & meet some new faces. Many thanks to Jim for organising it again, top man!
Special mentions for MoJoKe's markbass multiamp & squidgy soft pedal controller, impressive bit of kit.
Andy's mahoosive boutique pedal board of crazy filthy pitch shifting shenanagins.
David (cotswaldbassguitars) for his tasty selection, loved the 65 P with flats, felt like yer favourite old slippers, just, well, right. The warwick streamer ss was my first play on a wick, I've an aversion to their knobby top bout shape, it was a really nice bass to play, liked it a lot.
Pinballs g&l sb-2 was a revelation, great bass, very lively pickups, superb bit of kit.
Mornats squier vm jazz had the slimmest neck ever, great feel to it & the most groovy competition winning scratch plate.
Woodinblack's ACG was initially strange due to the assymetric neck but after a few minutes felt great, nice bass. His fishman powerchord pedal thingy was great fun too.
Didnt get time to play all but next time, Jims Kingbass, Keiths (Yorks5stringer) self build Shuker & Tanuki's Lakland Decade will be first on my list.
Great way to spend an afternoon with a great bunch, cheers all!

What a lovely bunch of guys - and such a phenomonal selection of gear to try out. From a sixties P-bass (and lots of Fenders), to Lakland, Warwick, Stingray, Status, Ibanez, G&L plus quite a few custom builds. There was even an Ashbory. Amp brands included Trace, Genz, Markbass, Warwick, Barefaced and Ashdown. The DIY community was represented by Jim's Fearful 15/3 and a couple of prototype Basschat 1 x 12s. Thanks to everyone who brought their gear along and also to Jim for doing the organising.

The Italy vs. Indonesia match took place and was recorded for posterity. I would venture to claim that they were clearly not the same, but have a listen when the audio files are posted and make up your own mind. Woodinblack also recorded the Basschat 12s, which I am looking forward to hearing when he puts them up.

It was not long enough, I'm afraid, as I didn't get a chance to try everything I wanted. Maybe next year.......

Mike's brought some fabulous valve gear and other retro kit to the South East Bash over the years, as well as to the more sporadic West Sussex Bashes, and if that's your particular fancy, then you won't be disappointed if he takes you up on your suggestion next year!

Sounds like a great day was had by all :)
So many basses, so little time...

Appreciate its a bit of a schlep from sussex to our neck of the woods but for me any valve gear is interesting so he'd have a fanboy here!
We had 3 all valvers, my v4, a markbass & an ashdown. All sounding good to me.
might try & make the 10th south east bash next year as an insurgent from the kingdom of wessex!

what was the retro looking bass with the jazz style pickups & the lovely rolled edges to the fretboard?
Didnt get a chance to plug it in, looked very cool!

The Reverant I think...?

Is there a list of what was there as it was a really interesting mix?

Well that went well I thought, thanks to everyone who turned up, and was a fair number.
Some great kit on show, markbass challenge was good sound files to follow later thanks to woodinblack and he's toys.

I will probably try to sort another bash in the spring/summer if there's enough interest.

Jim.

Hi Norm! Well the good news is I can help you with two of those..................and of course more good news..................I owe you a beer!

That G&L was an awesome bass too. The range of tones on offer by adjusting the volume control for each pickup on a bass that doesn't have a tone control was incredible!

That Fender custom shop bass with the semi-hollow P body, jazz neck and P/humbucker combo was just so lovely David. As was the 65 P and the Shuker and the Warwick. If I had a house to sell... :)

I think the take-home message from the MarkBass shootout was that you can still buy with confidence from MarkBass. Nothing wrong at all with their Indonesian-made combos. Also, the tweeter mod (on my Indonesian one) seems to help push the mids out and give the combo more presence.

So as a start, here are two sound clips, aa.wav, and bb.wav.
They are both the recordings done at the bass bash of a Markbass CMD 121p. One of them is the Italian one and one of them is the Indonesian one. The Italian one is stock, the Indonesian has a replacement tweeter. There is a P Bass being played through it.

So which is better?

A: Attached File  monthly_10_2015/post-31097-0-57918200-1445296264.ipb   1.58MB

B: Attached File  monthly_10_2015/post-31097-0-18116400-1445296266.ipb   1.84MB

In normal basschat post way, you probably have to download then and rename them back to .wav!
