G&L tribute L2500. whats the verdict?

Im getting bored with the sound of my 55-01 and am looking for a different sound, keeping with 5 strings.
I have never really liked the Jazz style sound from the lakland and fancy something a bit thicker.
The BC are doing the G&L for £399 so i was thinking about having a look at one.
Just wanted to get some opinions if anyone has any

Cheers

i used to have the G+L L2000 4 string. It was a lovely bass and the sound of it was incredible but it was a seriously heavy bass and the neck was one of the fattest I've encountered. I think they do ones with differing neck profiles though? so perhaps mine was just a chunky one! a very nice bass all in all, but not right for me personally.

peace

I have a US ASAT, which has the same electronics (I think).

Good range of sounds, well built, but as above, my bass is very heavy and the neck is very deep, though, not that wide (it's a #8 neck I think). I'm guessing the L2500 will be the same or similar. I love it however, the neck feels very nice to me and the weight isn't THAT bad.

the #8 neck is a peach but its not going to be on an L2500.

I cant speak about the build quality, action, fit and finish on the Tribute models but the electronics are the same as those on the USA ASAT/L2k and 2500 and they really are great-the permutations are mind boggling but easy to get round. In passive mode with the middle switch in series and the front one on neck pickup it does a great P-bass,likewise I can get close to the sounds of a Jazz and a Stingray with a couple of switch throws.another feature is the fact that if your battery goes down it plays fine in passive mode.I think the G&L passive treble and bass system is neat too and I like the fact you can lock up the hefty saddles within the big meaty bridge once set.

and imo the G&L MFD pickups sound more full on and ballsy than just about any others I've heard

I know that nig on these boards has both a L2500 and an L5500 for sale if your heart desires a USA model

Thanks guys.
I like the idea that i can get a P-bass sound out of it as i would love a 5 string P-bass.
Does anyone have any sound clips as i have no experience of these pick ups and not sure what to expect.
I can handle a deep neck i think but i dont like them too wide.

Ill investigate one when i get the chance. sounds like i might like it.

My thoughts exactly Dave! Like you, I've always wanted a P-Bass tone from a 5-string but getting a boutique model like a Valenti or Shuker for example, seems to be really expensive.

For that and other reasons, I've had an interest in one of these L2500s for quite a while now and, if money was no object, then a USA version would probably be very nice. If you do get to try one out, please let us know what you think of it, thanks.

I have a USA L2000 with the #6 neck (1.5" at the nut, 7.5" radius), and love it. I would say you can't get an exact P bass sound, as the MFDs have their own character, but you can get a massive range of sounds that get close to the aforementioned basses. Even just moving your hand position will do a lot - no real need to twiddle knobs in the middle of the song to move from fat thump (neck direction) to nasal snarl (bridge). Best to try rolling off the volume, bass & treble as well -you lose out in some ways by having them all at full throttle - those MFDs (even in passive) are HOT!

Here's a sound sample thingy - click the green "play" button a couple of times, then twiddle the switches as you wish. In Dutch, but easy enough to work out.

Can I also point out Ollie's review of a L2000 tribby on this site?

Thanks richard.
Yes, i realise only a p-bass sounds like a p-bass but i guess its more that im trying to get more of a thump and less of a jazz sound so i feel the L2500 might be ok. Im really only looking at this because of the low price to be honest.
I have no idea what the different neck numbers will mean to me as i haven tried any of them but ill certainly try a L2500 asap.
Thanks for the links as well.

One thing that would put me off getting something that nice would be the fact that whatever i have would be used a lot. And while i do look after my gear i would prefer to have something that, while looking nice wont make me paranoid about putting it down somewhere or getting buckle scratches etc on it.
My 55-01 goes in a very thin Levy's gig bag and site on the parcel shelf of my drummers car. I wouldn't be able to use a hard case. Even my Ritter bag wont fit.
Also tone isnt that important to me as long as it does the job. All my gear has been brought to fit in with our transport situation and while i have of course chosen it based on other things i doubt i would use any of it if i had my own car. As long as the L2500 feels "right" to play and can make the right noises that fit in the mix then i would be very happy.
I recently played a USA lakland and while i could see how well it was finished etc i felt that the difference in tone between that and my 55-01 could have been down to different strings as well as any other factor but i know i would be scared to take the USA one out of the house considering how much it cost.

That's really cool; be good if you could get one for lots of different basses so you could easily hear how they sound.
