Basschat Noodle Bar - MARCH

Welcome to the Basschat Noodle Bar™!

The rules are simple:

Record yourself playing bass for up to 60 seconds. You can record whatever the heck you like: an original riff or lick; something from your band’s own repertoire; or a well-known piece you’re currently practicing. Doesn’t matter what. Just record something.

Make sure it’s bass only: no other instruments. FX and pedals are allowed, including loopers. Simple click tracks and metronomes are equally fine and dandy. Just no backing tracks, MIDI, loops or other samples.

Upload your recording to SoundCloud, YouTube or another music-sharing platform of your choice. Once you’re finished, post the link to your recording in this thread. Job done!
IMPORTANTLY… don’t worry about the quality of your recording. If you don’t have any recording equipment, simply plonk a mobile phone in front of your speaker cab and hit record. Easy peasy.

The deadline for entries is Thursday 31st March.

We’ll then run a vote on everyone’s favourite contributions - and the winner will be added to the prestigious Noodle Bar Hall of Fame!

Well here we are again... wonder if the initial interest will remain now we're lurking here in the depths of the recording forum

I shall have another go this month, with something resembling an actual bassline this time... I think I shall attempt to showcase my recent progress with pick playing, dubious as it may be

Looking forward to hearing a new batch of noodles from BCs great and good... :)

Looks like it’s me up first again!

Here’s this month’s noodle:

https://soundcloud.com/agwin/fretless-tune-march-noodle

Played on my defretted Hohner Precision copy strung with dead rounds.
Straight into Audacity then “normalised” (what ever that is – just seemed to make it louder) and a bit of phaser added.
It just sort of formed it’s self out of thin air after watching a few minutes of Scott Devine expounding on arpeggios.

I was subsequently inspired to fire up my Sibelius software and have a bit of a compose.
I seem to have ended up with a potential ITV Murder Mystery theme.
I’d be chuffed to bits if you could find the time to also give this a listen– It’s not very long about 01:20 in total.

A tasty noodle, and very nice 'mini' compo. Definitely Agatha Christie territory; well done. I trust you'll be extending it into a more substantial work..? B)

Lovely :) I like the little walking bit at the end.

The Normalisation seems to have done the trick as well, that's plenty loud and clear... I shall attempt to do something similar with mine in garageband before uploading it.

I have a little noodle for his month coming together, but as I may have an NDB later in the month, I think I'll wait until then to give the new bass an airing :)

Enjoyed that. Both bits.

Think you could be on a money maker with your murder mystery theme song!

So in the spirit of consistency, i'll go second again:

https://soundcloud.c...a-fied/noodle-2

I know i said i'd do more of a proper bass line, but i didn't really want to sir, and it is a solo bass track sir, and this is just what i am "noodlin" with at the moment sir

Enjoy :D

Edit to say it is recorded in Garageband through the "classical bass guitar" sound preset, as that seemed a pretty clean sound. I don't have speakers, and cant get any monitor sound, so i only hear the recorded sound after i record. Exciting  . 10% reverb.

Thank you Gents for taking the time to listen to both bits. :)

Thanks Dad3353 for the link explaining Normalise.
I hadn’t considered extending the Murder Mystery Theme until you suggested it

Looking forwards to hearing CamdenRob’s “New Bass” noodle later in the month.

Just listened to FuNkShUi’s splendid new noodle – I do like the tone of your bass.

:D

Another great noodle, kinda reminded me of something French dare I say? Yes I got a Parisian vibe off that.

Oddly enough I think I went third last time (I think) and was just about to record again now but it's got a bit late and I shall be using the iPads mic again don't like to disturb the neighbours to much.
Mine will be up tomorrow evening I reckon.

It's over a minute!! Stone Him!!!!

Nice to get more noodlers in, welcome!!

I liked it. The run at 0.17 secs of A - B - C into your harmonics is very "portrait of tracey".
I dont mean that in a bad way. Cool piece. I liked it.

I have to be honest, I had to check I hadn't played the same track twice with these two!

Nice harmonic based stuff, good clean playing too, notes ringing out clear and true :)

Hearing the similarity reminds me we should have had some sort of theme for these noodles each month, something to judge them against each other a bit easier... harmonics, chords, pick playing, slap :o etc.

Cheers!

Yeh i agree, i'd be ok with a new "theme" (whatever it might be) decided by the previous months winner.
Could be a genre, an influence, a technique, a player, or a title. Anything really

Funny enough, so is mine! :D

https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/ramin

I was going to play something down the low end, but there was a spider up at the 12th fret that I was trying to catch.
I did get it, but by that time, my minute was almost up.

Ibby recorded into Logic with compressor, some EQ & a little reverb.

Thanks for your feedback.

Not sure on the idea of having to use particular playing techniques

I thought I'd give this a whirl! As you can tell, I have no idea how to record bass onto a computer. Basically I plugged the bass into my stereo, set a metronome to 95, pressed record on the iPad and played for one minute.

Like the little repeating melody on that... It's like a mini jazz tune, doing the melody then a little noodle then back to the melody again, full tune in a minute :) sounds damn growly as well... Great tone.

My phone doesn't seem to want to let me quote more than one post in each reply... Oh well I'll just do them separately.

That's a proper widdle that is... Truly in the spirit of things.

I quite like the idea, next month of not preparing anything and just pressing play for a minute and seeing what comes out...
