JamesTun Posted May 14, 2016 Share Posted May 14, 2016 HI, Just messaging this out of interest if anyone has or in a prog style band and wondering where the best places in the country for that genre are? I've been looking around in Yorkshire and can't seem to find anything. I like playing simple funk stuff but eventually I would like to make music of that ilk. Yorkshire is like the biggest county outside London as well..I know this isn't Joinmyband or anything but I'm interested if anyone has any success. Beer of the Bass Posted May 14, 2016 Share Posted May 14, 2016 It's definitely a bit of a niche interest, and then there are further niches within the genre. I mean, I would cheerfully join a band that was influenced by some of the eccentric 70s UK prog bands, but some of the music that gets called prog now sounds almost like a metal sub-genre and I don't really enjoy that stuff. Obviously since Punk's evolution in the 70s, English prog rock has seemed to die out. But more recently, bands such as Haken, BTBAM have come out of the woodwork with influences of Gentle Giant, Genesis. I guess this then begins to transcend in what you are referring to when you say progressive metal. This does interest me but its a very enclosed community, particularly in the North. I'm pretty sure there are frequent stuff going around this genre in London, maybe I'm just missing a trick by living in Yorkshire where people don't want to jam with you as you have no transport or live in another city.. Certainly Jazz circles don't use this medium as there are plenty of workshops around Sheffield which probably pre-occupy their time. Without seeming facetious, would a bike not be an option for really local stuff, with a light combo on the carrier and a bass as a backpack..? I think I've seen on this forum mention of folks gigging by bus or train. I understand, of course, that an Ampeg fridge would require a car or van, but are there really no transport options open at all, with appropriate gear..? A friend of mine is a rediculassly talented pro/ session guitarist who has just released his 2nd solo album which appears to be doing great! (And it is too) His solo stuff is under the monika "the Dave" , but dave foster has played with mr so&so, tours regularly with steve Rothery band (ex marillion) and regular guest slots with Panic Room. There is a few math bands knocking around which is cool, sounding like Foals etc. I'll join some of these groups, see if anything comes to fruition. No doubt there is a Genesis forum and a Marillion forum as well as loads of others. I think you probably need to decide what exactly you want to play. What era and what artists. Then find a forum. There will be musicians on them. I have a selection of friends who are always talking about getting a prog band together but unless you're going to play prog hits it's a very specialist market. Probably just as specialist as the originals scene. If you market it well you'd definitely get pub gigs and a following. Assuming you can drag some fans away from their XBoxes and Linux PCs. Norris Posted May 15, 2016 Share Posted May 15, 2016 I've bought Prog magazine a couple of times recently. Going by the cover CD prog is still going strong especially in Eastern Europe. Not sure what the Yorkshire scene is like though We have two or three vintage prog songs on our covers band set list.
