Welcome to the Basschat Noodle Bar™!

The rules are simple:

Record yourself playing bass for up to 60 seconds. You can record whatever the heck you like: an original riff or lick; something from your band’s own repertoire; or a well-known piece you’re currently practicing. Doesn’t matter what. Just record something.

Make sure it’s bass only: no other instruments. FX and pedals are allowed, as are simple click tracks and metronomes - but no loopers, please.

Upload your recording to SoundCloud, YouTube or another music-sharing platform of your choice. Once you’re finished, post the link to your recording in this thread. Job done!
Or in short: PRESS RECORD > PLAY BASS > PRESS STOP > DRINK TEA

The deadline for entries is midnight on Thursday 30th June.

I'm definitely going to be in this month.

Haven't been playing bass much these past few weeks - work and home life intervening - so I'm due some solid noodling to get back in the saddle, so to speak.

Probably some description of funk (I'm still plodding my way through a funk riffs book), but I might diversity into something jazzy and walking. We'll see.

Just add soy sauce and stir... :D

I'm slowly working through our basses; this month I may break out the Cort fiver, which hasn't seen action in... Well, far too long. One day (shan't say when...), I'll pluck up courage and bravado to do a stint of sixer fretless. Noodling..? I could open a chop suey parlour, I reckon. Can't play a tune for toffee, but oodles of noodles. S'gonna be a good year (no, not the tyres, you numpty..! ).

I have two simple noodles I've been messing about with one Punk inspired that should of been last months or one kinda Vietnam war era tune inspired.

Or I was going to try play two or more basses at the same time into one amp lol. I thought I could get some small rubber pieces attach them in the appropriate place with multiple elastic bands and a pencil ala capo style to form a chord on each bass, 4 basses in the house so that four chords then all I have to do is strum them in the correct order.
But on second thoughts nah.

I'm not enjoying this mental image.

*You can explain most things by saying "That's Jazz" putting on an accent if needed.
I played in a band with some mates when I was about 13 and we had a guitarist who when tuning up would get bored half way though and just say "ah well it's close enough for jazz" ...

I'll go first then.
I have a busy month so may not get another chance to record one if i didn't do it today.
Agwin, apologies for stealing your spot ;)

Here's mine:

Recorded straight from bass into garageband. No amp simulation, 7% reverb on my AJR singlecut.
Hope you enjoy :)

Just listened back to it for the first time, i should probably have used some compression!! Sorry about that

Help yourself - it makes a change not to be first :)

Ironically it could be a while before I get this month's noodle posted.

That's a lovely little ditty to kick us off this month. Nice barky tone there as well... :)

I've not really used harmonics in a piece before... Everyone else seems to make it sound so natural, always sounds a bit like I've put them in for the sake of it when I try.

Thanks. I panned towards back pickup so that might explain the barkier tone.

I only used the harmonic once when I originally 'noodled' the piece. But the harmonic is a G, and the piece was vaguely based around G major, so I thought it served well in tying it all together.

Very nice really like the tone.

And something a bit different and not as well recorded. I think next month I might start using a proper mic and interface, i prefer micing a cab over direct. I actually could go direct now but in the spirit of making the noodles simple as poss I've carried on with the iPad only method but getting a bit tired of it. Just need to get a suitable mic

Anyhow kinda punk inspired this actually went wrong and ended up playing too many bars of one thing and missing something out. But that's Jazz.
Fender mustang reissue and brand new roundwounds urgh iPad sat in the middle of me and a Ashdown 4x10 powered by Bugera bvp5500. There's a pro set up right there haha.

Oh bugger I'm 17 seconds over just realised. You will have to forgive my mistake please that's the extra bars.

The recording sounds OK to me on my speakers - are you hearing a big difference between the low end representation in the room and what the ipad mic is picking up if you listen back on decent speakers?
I would say the mic does a decent(ish) job, it pics up the highs and mids ok, but it will get overloaded easy by the bass if placed too close or it's too loud.
But even at a level it can handle it doesn't capture the low end quite like it actually is. The mic picks up the whole room no matter what direction it's in, hence why my playing fret/finger noise etc is picked up just as much as the amp. If it was more focused it would be a bit better.
My eq is pretty flat(ish) which I guess helps the iPad out.
I guess the recording is actually like I turned my treble up from 11.30 to 1pm, mids up a touch from 12 to 1pm and my bass down a touch from 12.30pm down to 11am. So not too bad a representation for an iPad. If I place it in different areas of the room I can get some nice room ambience going lol.

Good stuff TC :)

Is this something that came out of your jam with the guitarist earlier on in the week?

No it was from my failed punk project 2 months back. I came up with a few different punk style riffs/noodles etc nothing that's not really been unheard before. Hard to be truly original in punk. And they never seen the light of day.

I always try to have a listen to each noodle as soon as I can after it's been posted.
Had a number of tries to hear this but keep getting this message from Soundcloud:
Anyone else having problems?

Maybe the track has been removed.
