Im thinking of getting myself a macbook air, looking at the spec sheet there is no line in port. Just wondered if i can plug in my bass with a usb cable or would I need an audio interface. It's only for noodling on with headphones when my little one is asleep (can't wake the beast)

If the headphone port works with the iPhone headphones (which is more than likely), then you could get an adaptor that has in/out to plug into it, such as an iRig.

I'd still opt for an audio interface.

There are several options. If you need to use the Mac, you will need some kind of device to convert the analogue hi-Z output of your bass to a digital signal. There are in-line type devices, desktop audio interfaces, rack mount interfaces etc. The other option is to use a dedicated bass preamp / headphone unit, such as a PJB BigHead or Zoom unit, which could also be used standalone. It will also depend whether you want to noodle along to a backing track or not, and on your budget.
