I'm entertaining the idea of using one myself which can take instrument level (a gain section) have a really good parametric EQ (4 band hopefully) maybe an option for inserts, possibly a headphone out but most definitely be able to drive a power amp with zero additional noise. I haven't put a huge amount of thought in to this to be honest so maybe there's some features I've not yet thought about. The only thing I have thought about which possibly rules out other options is that I'd like it to be either a 1u rack or smaller!
