Beedster Posted August 27, 2016 Share Posted August 27, 2016 (edited) I bought this almost unused from Muzz a few months ago when I found myself needing a stand-in bass for a few gigs whilst my new 4/4 was being fettled! I'm a complete instrument snob so assumed that being mass produced it wouldn't be up to much. However, it's probably one of the best DBs I've played let alone owned, extremely resonant with great sustain, extremely well engineered and robust with high quality hardware, very very easy to play (I can play this for hours whereas I can play my 4/4 for about 45 minutes before my fingers struggle), and beautifully finished. The Animas, which are almost new, just add to the tone, class and playability. Sale only. List price is £2750, street around £2250, so £1200 is a bargain, especially with the Amimas (having said this I can't find anyone who has them in stock at present). Beedster Posted August 27, 2016 Author Share Posted August 27, 2016 Forgot a few important details, it's fully carved spruce/maple 3/4 size, but the narrow upper bout makes it feel smaller. It's also extremely portable (in fact I'm quite happy to pop up to that London on the train to hand this over if needs be). It comes with its original soft case. Speaking length 40.5, Board length 35.5, Upper bout 19.0/7.5, Lower bout 25/8.0, Height 70.0 And an indication of its size relative to my new (and rather well proportioned) full-size bass .... Total bargain [/quote] Thanks Pete, always the way isn't it, and it was the same for me when I started out, the only basses for sale were either £300 firewood or £3000 German flatbacks! Having said that, I learned on £300 firewood and whilst it probably slowed me down a little, it meant that I can really appreciate it when I come across a decent instrument. It occurred to me today that I would take a cheapish ply 4/4 in PX for this, probably up to £600 in value (of course the chances of anyone having one are slim but thought I'd mention it anyway). The guy who recently did some work on it said he'd never seen such a big DB, and he's worked on a fair few in his time (he was pretty pleased to get it out of his workshop, I think it was scaring some of the 3/4s). I had to buy a custom H-clamp to get a mic on it as well, even the standard 4/4 model wasn't big enough. It's strung with guts and has a glorious and effortless tone, bass just oozes from it. If the Stentor is quite versatile and almost hifi, I'd liken the Beast it to a Precision strung with flats with the tone slightly rolled off through an old tube head and a Mesa 2x15 I have to say though, it's a b*****d to move around, doesn't not go through doors easily at all, and only just fits in my car. It sustains for ever, comfortably over ten seconds without too much effort. I have never played such a resonant and subtle instrument, quite incredible. This is a very cheap price for a very good bass, and one that doesn't come up for sale used very often (which is probably an indication of just how good it is). I'd like to keep it but there are too many DBs and not enough space here, so I'll eBay it at the end of the the week if no-one here wants it.
