FS: Gibson J-200 acoustic **SOLD**
£2000

Recommended Posts

The King of acoustics, simple! I won't go into lengthy details, I can add further info in response to any questions (please ask in the thread as opposed to by PM). I love this guitar but - despite the fact it's the guitar equivalent of a dogs' home mongrel - I love my MK-35 even more. I tried to sell the latter here http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry3068780 but when push came to shove couldn't part with it, so this J-200 has to go.

Unsurprisingly (given the trading history between me and Chris) this was mine until earlier this year, and it's a truly fabulous guitar - the responsiveness to touch, clarity, and depth of tone are simply breathtaking. There's a couple on the Vintage & Rare site for close to £3K, so this is a great price for a legendary acoustic guitar, in collectors grade state with OHSC and case candy.

Stetson optional ;)

Ha ha, and mine before that :)

Thanks Greg, hope all's well mate, and as you can see, the MK-35 won after all, there's something about the middy tone of it that just works with DB really nicely, whereas of course the J-200 has a great bass tone all of its own.

Fancy a trade for a Gibson Mandolin :D

Lol - no, we've done this years trade already! ;). Still looking for a nice F-5 mando though......
If I was a half-decent guitar player the J-200 would still be chez Shaggy - someone more deserving will absolutely love it

Did you ever try the pickup output on the MK-35?

I did, and that's in part why it's staying and the J-200 going Greg. For me the amplified tone of the MK-35 (albeit through either an Avalon U5 or a REDDI) is spot on. The J-200 sounds glorious through both of course, and far more impressive soloed, and I would of course like to keep both, but the MK-35 is simply my go to guitar, and £2000 is a lot to have sitting around unplayed :)
That '55 is pure magic and a hell of a surprising beast isn't it John? Glad you're enjoying it mate

And yes, having just checked the surprisingly high prices these go for on eBay, the J-200 is something of a steal, thanks :)

Cool - I never tried it only because I didn't have the right sized jack (i.e. sheer laziness).
Glad you've bonded with that MK-35; I've never seen another for sale. Hope the J-200 sells soon, as I'm wanting it back!

John - if you ever think of moving on that Gibbo EM 150 electric mandolin, please let me know! :)

Always wanted one of these, having looked into it it seems that the used dealers are around 2500 to 3k for a 'not very nice' looking used one, yours looks perfect, is it?

Dawsons will sell you a new one for £2999, can anyone tell me why I shouldn't buy the new one? Sorry I'm trying to understand the market a bit before I dive in.
cheers.

I agree Tom, it seems odd doesn't it. Used models, especially 90's, do however sell very high given current retail price. Two factors; first, most players of wooden acoustic instruments from mandolin to double bass prefer well played-in instruments and recognise that the woods in even a top acoustic instrument require several months, if not years, of opening up (I'm playing my new DB two hours per day in this context). Second, as with Fender basses, I get the feel that certain eras are considered to be better than others, and as was the case with Fender in the late 90's/early 2000s, current Gibson output isn't considered to be as good as it could be.

Yes, this guitar is in very good condition and nicely played in. Please feel feel to enquire further mate

Chris

Very true ! :)

I've still not gotten around to taking your advice to try the DB yet though.. That and playing fretless electric bass are still sadly lacking on my musical CV..

Have another BUMP for this beautiful, very well played-in, classic guitar!

Ha ha, you're not a real bass player until you've gigged DB Nik, and there's a lovely one here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/290720-fs-stentor-elysia-dbvelvet-animas/page__fromsearch__1 :)

Re the guitar, given how much they go for on eBay I think I'll try my luck there unless there's any takers here in the next couple of days?
