I bought my brand new Wal mk1 for £750 in 1986...
Gorgeous inherent tone, amazing tonal flexibility, breathtaking build quality, Marmite neck ...and HEAVY!

I bought one secondhand in 1989 for £400. Sold it a year later for the same. I hate to think about how much it appreciated since then, but it went to a good home. For me,the neck was just too much and it gave me terrible shoulder ache. Certainly built to last though.

Here´s another Wal, obviously mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3y2IRHgtxs
I bought her new in 1989 for 3500 DM (german Mark). In the meantime I had >30 other basses but this one is my big love. Most of the others had to go at some point, even if I played them for quite some time. Whenever I grab this one it feels like home. Somehow everything at this bass is exactly how I like it. That surely isn´t elitism.

Reposting a comment from Rob Burns in the Wal Facebook group...

"May want to exchange my prototype Wal 6 string for a Wal 4 or 5 string ebony fretless. Any interest?"

Rob was considering this prior to his recent nasty hand injury and we'd been discussing offline prior to his accident so not directly related. The bass in question is a solid ash 6 string that Pete had used as a prototype for the 6 string/Mark III design. He gave it to Rob as a gift... and it's a beaut! Currently de-fretted but Rob has the original frets and is happy to restore to original.

His motivation is he's just not using it and would rather it was. On the other hand, he sold both his 4's many moons ago and has realised over the years that was a huge mistake.

Info about the bass on my Wal blog here. http://walbasshistory.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/wal-players-discuss-their-basses-rob.html

If you're seriously interested PM Rob on Facebook.

The replacement body for my 1988 MK1 is almost ready. It was originally black poly and I will get around to sharing the full story soon.

Excited for you Rob, is your new build close to being finished?

No still a little way away unfortunately... maybe six months. Hopefully going to have a look at some facing wood options on Friday :)

I'm just going down to pick up my Ziricote sixer that's been in for a service.
