Cubase AI vs Cubase Elements

Hi all,
Having found Ableton live lite just too un-intuitive I'm thinking of moving to Cubase.
Mainly becasue my tame sound engineer can work cubase but can't work Ableton.
I can get an actual person teaching me Cubase.

or I can buy the Elements version and keep my Focusrite 2i2.
It works with the trial version.


Which way to go?
Is the Elements version way better than the bundled version.
Am I likely to run into problems using one companies soundcard on anothers programe?

You could give reaper a try - it won't cost you anything to try it out, and if you decide you want to use it, you won't have to keep buying upgrades as their model is pay once at a very reasonable price as opposed to the big name DAWS who expect you to stump up for every major upgrade.

I bought the Elements version. All good, some features however missing which are really intuitive such as the Chord Assistant. However I don't think AI has this either. It does the job and UI is really friendly.

With reference to the soundcard issue, no not at all. I use my Focusrite 2i2 in Cubase when I'm not using Logic. If you're on Windows just make sure you have the correct Focusrite drivers installed as don't think it's plug and play on there.

I use Cubase Pro, but I do have Elements on my Laptop and it is works a treat.
Elements saves me taking the Syncrosoft dongle out on the road - Elements (and A1) are both soft elicenser, so no USB dongle needed.

The UR22 MkII does have midi in/out, which covers you if your midi keyboard/controller is not USB, or you are struggling with spare USB ports.

Definitely a good advice. I changed from Cubase Elements to Reaper because the whole copyprotection has always been unstable on my systems. Paid $60 for a discounted license - after having it tested for three month.

Apologies for the thread resurrection, and the deviation from the topic, but I've been trawling the forum for info on the UR22.

I currently have the UR12 running into Cubase AI9, which is great for my purposes. Recording the drummer's electronic kit individually through the interface is fine, ditto my bass, but we also like to play together and record to capture ideas. We both go into a little powered mixer which we then output into the interface. It works fine, but obviously this way we go onto one track in Cubase.

Am I right in thinking (hoping) that with the UR22 we could both go direct into the interface, and then fairly easily assign drums to one track and bass to another track while still playing simultaneously?

Yes, that is correct, and would be the case with just about any interface with two inputs.
You could cheat, however, with your current interface, by taking the o/p from one of your mixers and using a DI to go into the mic i/p of the UR12, the other mixer going into the other i/p. I'm assuming that the UR12 can record mic and instrument together, on different tracks in the DAW..? It might not be quite as flexible as the UR22, but it's perhaps worth a try..?
