Wiring a jack socket on an active bass

On an active bass, there's usually three tags on the socket that have wires attached to them - I think the sockets are stereo sockets? Mostly - they're fully enclosed, so how on earth do you decide which wire to solder onto which lug?

Just buy a non-enclosed socket where you can see the connections, the good quality ones (Switchcraft etc.) are usually like this anyway.

They are called TRS sockets, Tip, Ring, Sleeve. You are referring to a barrel socket. Almost without fail wiring will be sleeve earth, ring will be battery and tip will be hot.
