I liked Prog Rock mag at first but after a while it seemed there was only so much '70's stuff they could regurgitate and that was always going to disappear up it's own chocolate channel.

This is the problem I found with it, after a year or so it just began to repeat itself.
I did enjoy it for a time though, as pretty much every issue had somebody I know in it, good fun to see your friends in a music mag.

Can't help feeling that print media is doomed.

Very true. The main reason being that print advertising isn't value for money now Facebook has a monopoly.

To be honest, it's been a long time coming and the "pay for coverage/ratings" system of these mags needs to be buried along with the out of date philosophies of major record labels. Every cloud.

On the plus side, for those who used to buy Classic Rock and Metal Hammer you now have some spare money for your monthly issues of Razzle :D

I think Razzle disappeared years ago along with Fiesta and all the other hedge porn titles we occasionally used to find lurking in the undergrowth back in the day.

Shame it's gone - can't say I ever bought any of their publications, although I do read the website daily.

I think it is a music press thing in general. I bought the odd Metal Hammer in the 80s as a teen, but in the 90s it was NME, MM, Select, Vox....loads to choose from and buy regularly.

One by one they vanished, and I stopped buying the NME in about 2003 as it became, well, a joke if I'm honest.

I then became a Q reader and subscriber until earlier this year. Again, the content was becoming more and more forgettable - every issue was a '20 years since....' piece, of which many I remember first time around, and had no desire to read about again!

Subscription stopped, and as a lifelong music mag reader, I now only buy Total BMW magazine. I think that sums it up! :(

Think the magazines were doing okay and returning a profit, the problem was the parent company, their other activities took them down. Teamrock had an advert free radio station on DAB for two years, which must have cost the a fortune. Then they moved that to online and tried getting paid subscriptions for radio and content access to run alongside the print magazines – obviously didn’t work and has resulted in the magazines being taken down as the rest of the business failed.

From the facebook page of Rush:

"We are so saddened to hear the news of the sudden and abrupt demise of Classic Rock Magazine, Prog Magazine, Metal Hammer, Team Rock Radio, Team Rock online, as well as the Prog Awards and the Classic Rock Awards. We are thinking of the very talented and passionate staff that lived to bring the music of so many artists to their fans. We've met some amazing people through our interviews over the years with writers like Phil Wilding, Jerry Ewing, and Paul Elliott just to name a few. Props to Ben Ward who started a donation page to help the 73 staffers that are now without a job or wages just before the holidays. We're donating and we urge the rock community to do the same, whatever you can do to support: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ukrockcommunity"

Funds are at £73,102 at time of posting.

Good on the Rush team there, and other donating peeps.
I admit; I bought Prog once a year at best and never the other publications. Lists and endless adverts are not worth the price tag. Shame as there was good stuff: I got the special edition of err CR?, Prog? with the Clockwork Angels release.

 • 3 weeks later...

The magazines, Metal Hammer, Classic Rock & Prog have been purchased by Future Publishing for £800k. They were of course the publishers that originally sold the mags to TeamRock for £10m, a good bit of business for them I guess.
