Hitting the strings with drum sticks

Fairly early in Bruce Thomas's book "Rough Notes" he talks of the group Clouds. Looking them up on YouTube I found a drummer-bass player collaboration that I had never heard of before; see the section from about 2:20.

After a bit more ferreting around on YouTube, I discovered that the piece, "Big Noise from Winnetka", is quite old and that the drummer played the strings of an upright in the original. Still interesting to see it done with an electric though. No doubt there are a few other examples, but in my many years of playing it's the first time I've seen it done, so thought I'd share it.

My mate calls it lift music but I just kick him in the slats and tell him not to harshen my buzz. I lost both my vinyl and four track versions of Surprise Surprise a long time ago. A month or so back I downloaded a live performance and cranked it - hard. Lovely noise.

Brilliant :) I was in the warm up band for his gig and we had a chat during the stage change over. He was also kind enough to say some complementory things about my home - brewed bass lines

Please pass on my best if the opportunity presents itself :)

I remember a doing this with a drummer friend of mine in music college. I held down chords and he smacked the strings, it all went through an old DOD FX25 and sounded brilliant.

Unfortunately that recording is lost in the mists of time :(
