A few disparate recordings really set the hairs standing up on the back of my neck every time...

Elgar's Cello Concerto

Little Wing by Stevie Ray Vaughan

Gustav Holst's The St Paul's Suite - particularly the last movement, "The Dargason" when the melody from Greensleeves starts weaving its way around the main tune. He wrote this for his local girls schools annual concert... Amazing!

Complete Control The Clash and Song to the Siren by Tim Buckley. Saying that, every version of Song to the Siren I've heard has had the effect on me! There's a young lass on youtube does a version - https://youtu.be/K_CuyabubKs which I quite like...

Twist and Shout by the Beatles. I first heard it when it was released as my sister was an avid Beatles fan. It was the first recording that made me realise music could be something else. It literally made me jump around the room, there is something primal about that live performance captured on the album. Before that I thought music was something to sing or to dance to, not this song, it still makes my heart rate and blood pressure climb, pure excitement.

As the say, a song should make you either want to dance, cry, fight or f**k. If not its wallpaper.

David Gilmour, "High Hopes", the "Live in Gdansk" version. I can't listen to it more than once a year, headphones clamped on, weeping. The guitar solo is gut-wrenching. It will be played at my funeral.

My epitaph will be

"Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There's a hunger still unsatisfied..."

An odd trifecta from me :)

I am a Yanni fan and make no bones about it. When the french horns come in and the gals hit it right after with the vocals I'm soaring. Fantastic stuff.

As a kid the first song that I recall really touching me and making me realize just how powerful a tune and it's lyrics can be was this one. As above, I am an unabashed Neil Diamond fan.

This is about as good as it gets. So powerful and so very empowering. I love this iteration of it. There may be better done recordings of it but this just showcases what the song is about and how it can affect people. Superb!

A fourth occurs to me. Bowies Heroes at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert was amazingly touching. The look that May gets near the end ... just so in the moment and so forlorn looking. How can you not be touched by that?

This version of California Dreaming - the original is great, but always sounded sunny and happy, hiding the true melancholy of the lyrics. Here, Phillips age and fragility (he died before the album could be released) really shows through. Once those Mexican BV's kick in I'm gone!

Does this count as a recording?

Great aren't they? How they can put in such an intimate performance in that setting! And as for the way the two drummers work together...

Sadly the one I'd love to post isn't available - Bonnie's tribute to BB King at the Grammy Awards, where she wiped the floor with Chris Stapleton and Gary Clark on a version of The Thrill Has Gone - that was a very special performance.

Myke, guessing that you'll find this version moving in a rather different way... was in the studio audience when this was recorded. Still leaves me with a huge grin today!

That was fantastic, thank you. Oteil on the P(hat) Bass too!
