The worst song you have ever heard.?

This is a sticky subject, as of course music is subjective. But.. there is some absolute garbage out there.

I was subjected to this on saturday. Now I'm an open minded ear, but nothing prepared me for how sh*t this is. How on earth this record made money(and it did) is just beyond me. Alan Patridge's Monkey Tennis is a good idea compared to this.

The thing that really did me in, is that the song changes key a lot. And it goes on and on and on, and i was subjected to the 12' version.

Im not a musical snob, but you have draw the line somewhere. What is the actual point of this record. I have no idea.

Tricky one there's just so much irritating stuff out there.

However I'd like to offer two up for consideration:

http://youtu.be/YiunXTVBOe0

And

http://youtu.be/MWKchS0GAyo

Interestingly both artists are X Factor successes, both songs went to number 1 in the UK charts, before both songs effectively signaled the end of the commercial success of the artists involved.

My theory?

Marketing and PR will get you only so far before the public realises that your product is sh*te.

One of the guys involved in Star Trekking is a bit of a legend round here, lovely bloke called Dave Tenney.
Very clever musician and a great guitarist, been a pro most of his life. He wrote the song along with Tony Thorpe,
ex Rubettes and himself a top player. Think they were both surprised at the success of the song.
Watching an old TOTP recently, saw their band The Firm doing the follow up 'Arthur Daley he's alright'.

Both dire hits IMO, but hope they made some money out of them.....

I think some people miss the point of songs like startrekking, they weren't written to be brilliant. They were written as a bit of fun with a catchy tune to have a laugh. They aren't my taste but I remember how many kids were singing it in school when it came out so it worked to some degree. The fact that I can still remember several verses is testament to the writers ability to define earworm in three minutes.

To me a truly awful song is one that is written to be good but isn't. That will come down to personal taste so is all a bit pointless. I think Coldplay continually produce the most annoying drivel on the planet but judging by album sales and awards etc etc I would appear to be in a minority. I despise Kylie Minogue with a passion but have a mate in his forties who thinks she is wonderful. All down to taste........

And they were never meant to be anything but a p@ss take, in a period where rubbish novelty hits was a norm - whether Jive Bunny and Stars On 45 or Captain Beaky. So in those teams they knew what they were doing and achieved it. They weren't meant to be art, they were meant to be daft... therefore I'd suggest they're not truly bad songs.

This on the other hand was done in all seriousness by an established, credible artist... this is really really good compared to the album version! You'll see what I mean from 1:11 onwards... and remember the studio version is much, much, much worse/annoying!

And in the "completely serious, should've known better pile"...

^ This.

The 'point' of Star Trekkin' was that it reached number one, no doubt earned a lot of money and was insatiably catchy - spreading like a virus long before the days of viral media as we understand it today. Job done.

Writing a song like that no doubt takes more skill than it might seem on the surface. Yes, it's an awful piece of music in some respects. But I can hear it in my head right now and I haven't even needed to click on the YouTube link. That's one helluva ear worm, no doubt about it. Same thing with the Birdie Song.

The KLF used a similar approach to Doctorin' The Tardis, as described in their book The Manual (worth a read for anyone interested). Again, they make it sound easy when writing this sort of stuff - and making it work - is actually rather difficult.

Ultimately, there's a fine line between good s*** and bad s*** ;)

Oh and PS: the KLF are reforming this year. Good timing methinks.

thread ends ....... here![/quote]

We actually do a cover of that. I hate that song with a passion and was not keen on the idea, but sadly, it really goes down well. <sigh>

This I always hated - the worst excess of disco as it is out of tune.

I'd suggest it's a novelty record like the Birdie Song , for fun or silly dance routines at parties, nowt wrong with fun

That however might be an insult to those involved as it got to no1 and kept Whitney Houston from the spot

I guess music has as many different intentions from taking itself seriously, political, relationship content through to dance to extreme silliness, and whislt they might compete for spots in sales charts many of them can't be compared on any other level, because they are not the same product

Surely a vote for worst song of all time has to go to one that was intended to be taken more seriously

My vote would probably go to Sandi Thom's "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in my Hair)".

^This. A punk rocker with flowers in their hair would probably get their head kicked in!

Others for me - Owen Paul, Waste of Time; Adrian Gurvitz, Gonna Write a Classic, and The Beatles, Yellow Submarine.
