Crowd pleasers - the perfect set list from a punters point of view

Summer of 69, Use Somebody, Mr Brightside, Sex On Fire, any Oasis, Happy, Get Lucky, any Bruno Mars, Superstition, Long Train Running, Play That Funky Music, Smells Like Teen Spirit, The Devil Went Down To Georgia, Livin On A Prayer, Don't Stop Believing, Jump, 500 Miles, Sit Down...

There's lots of them, and all go down well if played well...

I don't hate any of them...in fact I like playing all of them...

Thanks. It's what made me dust off my fretless.

Studio bass part originally played on an upright by the immaculate JD (used a fretless electric when playing it live with band in the 70's)

As previously said, cracking song!

I had never heard, or heard of, 'Sex on Fire' until about 3 months when I was briefly in a band that had it on their set list. I thought it was turgid drivel, both the original and their version of it. I quit the band before it reached the gigging stage.

Agree with most suggestions so far. A few more not yet mentioned...

Sweet Caroline (end of evening drunken singalong)
Rock Around The Clock
Crazy
Crazy little thing called love
Lady Marmalade
Angels/Hey Jude (end of evening drunken smooch and singalong)
It Must Be Love
Long train runnin'

So good it needs repeating. Dead easy too. I might nick that for my repertoire.

Hrm, been a good while since I've gigged if I'm honest, but the ones that seemed to translate well from year ( decade ) to year ( umm decade? :) )

Mustang Sally - if you want the girls on the dance floor, you have to have this in your arsenal.
Another One Bites the Dust - If you have a half way competent singer who can sell it this kills.
She Sells Sanctuary - Inexplicable. I can't figure out why it always seemed to go over well. My bands always dug playing it so win/win.
Dancing With Myself - Feet on the floor, butts moving = return gigs to the pub/bar.
Groove Me - Blues Bro's version. A dirty groove that gives folks something to dance to but at a manageable pace :)
Lets Get it On - ONLY if you have a singer with pipes! People get pissed if this comes of as faking the funk. When it's right it's always a crowd pleaser
You Shook Me All Night Long - Dudes dig it, gals dig it.
Honky Tonk Woman - Another one gals will fill that floor for.

Any pop culture tunes on perma rotation these days would work I imagine. Obviously from my set list it's been a spell since I gigged regularly. :)

I will throw in

"Don't Stop me Now" Queen, bloody tough to do well though!
"Sit Down" James, bloody hard to stay awake through!
"Sex on Fire" sorry dudes but the crowds love it.
"Chelsea Dagger" Flatellis or whatever

and as mentioned by others Dakota and Mr Brightside, I always loved playing Killers stuff, great sounding songs

If we're paying 'homage to le fromage', I'd add
anything by Abba i.e 'Mama mia', 'Does your mother know?'
'Man, I feel like a woman' Shania Twain
'Daydream believer' The Monkees
'Loveshack' B52's

Can you tell I play in a function band? ....

I'm glad The Greek picked 'reward' as a crowd pleaser, that's one I snuck into our set without too much trouble.
Also snuck in

Dreadlock Holiday
Walk the Dinosaur
Down Under
& Message in a Bottle

All band pleasers so far, got to wait until October to see if they're crowd pleasers!

People can scoff all they like but any band that played that set to a half decent standard would go down a treat and be booked in for their next date as they were paid by the happy landlord/lady, bride or groom etc.

I think I could do a lot worse than work towards getting all of these down to some degree or other. I am currently wanting to practice with some new tunes after a misguided project sank recently so wah-hey! I'm away again!

I agree, this set played well would go down a treat at your bog standard gig!

Laid by James goes down well if you're playing to the right generation. Dunno if it's the same outside Scotland but Dignity by deacon blue always gets a sing along going!
