ACG Recurve

Hey guys

So I quickly threw together a jam last night using one of ead's AGC's. This is me playing his fretted Recurve 4 string. I have to say I'm so blown away by these basses, really looking forward to meeting Alan at the London Bass Guitar Show!

Mix is a bit ropey and the solo is a bit "meh" but yo get the idea - it was late and I was tired! All recorded in Reaper. The rhythm part is 3 cloned tracks panned out with effects; one has a weird distored delay thing on it, another has a heavy chorus and the last one is clean. The rest of the track is the EQ straight off the bass with a touch of reverb for the solo.

Let me know what you think!

I noticed from your sig that you have a fair collection of them! How does the B sound on the 5/6 string? That was the only thing I didn't get to test out with ead's basses as he's got 4 strings exclusively. In fairness I'd imagine it's pretty punchy and dominant going on the perfomance of the Recurve. What sort of string spacing do you have on the 5? I'm interested because the Recurve I'm playing has an asymetric profile which is really cool and kind of forces you to use good technique but at the same time feels very natural to the way your hand wants to sit on the neck. I really love the fact that you don't have to fight the bass, it just gets out of your way and lets you play it.

The B's are great on my basses, and the longest scale I have is 33"!
I've had a few ACGs come and go as I've balanced GAS issues and figured out what I really want in a bass, and all of them have had amazing B strings, and again all of them previously have been 33" scale.
My 6 string is actually 31.5" scale, and the low B is ridiculously good, especially when you factor in the scale!

My 5er has 18mm spacing and a 45mm nut, both standard for ACGs, my 6 string is actually 16.5mm spacing, bit of a hangover from playing Warwick basses, but makes for super fast finger style playing.
All my basses have the asymmetric neck shape and flat fingerboard too, again standard ACG stuff and I don't see myself ever going back to 'old fashioned' style stuff now.

For your consumption, here's a couple of samples featuring the low B on my 5 >> https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/if-you-want-me-to-stay and https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/rfb-series-active-sample
and also, here's some sound samples of my 6 string shorty, chordy noodlings and some low B action too >> https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/acg-salace-sc-e-type-samples

Hope that helps dude!

Just listened to these, some really lovely work there man. I love your approach to playing the chordal stuff on the 6 and the tone really sings. And you're right, that B sounds great!

I might add, I've since dialled in the strings on the 6 string, with a custom made Newtone set, a little lighter than I would usually go for with a taperwound B.
It's even more playable now, my shorter scale 4 ACG has the same set now too, but the 33" 5er seems to like things a little heavier.

I'd like to add that the B string on my 34" scale Finn stands head and shoulders above any B string that I've ever played. It's like playing a normal E string almost. I put it down to the rigidity in Alan's neck construction as that is the only unknown in the string tension equation.
