Quick fix to reduce that brand new string metallic "twang"??

You know that very metallic fizzy twang of a new set of strings that settles in after a couple of weeks of play? Any idea how to speed up that process?

I have left a string change too late and I definitely want to use the new set (rounds vs flat on my fretless suits the style of gig im about to play) but that zingy-ness is waaaaay too prominent. Gig is on Sunday and Ive changed them today, Thursday. Any ideas???

Give it a quick go-over with a chapstick, leave a couple of minutes then wipe it off. In the days when I couldn't afford to replace full sets of strings in one go I used to do this to dull a new string down a bit and match the others better.

I'm sure I read this in one of those "top studio tips" things years ago, but I can't remember.
